Hiya,

'Dullar' - I am going to do 2 volunteer placements at orphanages (1 in Kathmandu & Sankhu and 1 in a more rural area of Nepal) I will have about 3 weeks in between to do a trek and go to the national park etc and do a bit of travelling before volunteering again. I will be there from August until late November.

'lovetonu' - I'm very well thank you! that's very useful you being from Agra! I want to go to Varanasi first and then to Agra...in Varanasi I would quite like to book a little tour around or have someone to show me around as I will still be getting my bearings in India then! Are tours easy to book there or do you think I won't need one? I want to stay there for a few days before going to see the Taj. How long do you think I should stay in Agra for? 2 days? My friend travelled Rajasthan last year and she said I could do all of the places I want to (not in much depth, but a fairly OK insight) in about 20 days, do you think that is possible? then I will spend 10 days in the south...

The easiest way to get around those places would probably be an interrail pass which is a train pass that allows you to travel from country to country. I have travelled around France a bit and visited Barcelona etc and I have been skiing in Austria but I am not as well travelled around Europe as some of my friends. I have plenty of friends who I could get information on where to stay, what to do etc in all of these places though so just let me know I would be happy to help! With only 1 month 10 days you won't be able to do very much in each country but would be able to spend a bit of time in each! There will be a lot of people doing the same thing as you so you will meet many people!

Thanks,

Sophie

Hey Sophie ,

Am sure you have got a lot of advice out here . You don't really need to get onto a tour . That's ig you are the adventurous kind. India can be quite unnerving initially . Crowds , Noise etc.

Goa would be great in November as would Rajasthan . Will try and speak to a friend who is a travel guide and get some more info from him.

If you need help in Mumbai do let me know. I live there

Kirk

Hiya again,

You will fly into London and will be able to do the main touristy sights (London Eye, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Thames, Madame Tussauds, St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Royal Albert Hall, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park etc) in a few days - staying somewhere like Southwark may be quite a good location as it is central and near the sights. Do you want to go anywhere else in England? If so, Brighton is fantastic and only about 1 1/2 hrs on a train from London so you could stay there (by the sea) for a couple of days. I would suggest spending most of your time in London though as you are not in England enough to venture many places further away before getting back to London.

As I have said before you should get the 'Eurail Global Pass' (23 countries for non-EU residents) http://www.eurail.com/eurail-passes/global-pass
UK is not included in this though so you will either have to get a flight or the Eurostar to Paris.

I really don't think you will be able to go to Norway as it is pretty out of the way compared to other destinations for only 1 month. I reckon
there are the following 3 routes you could do:

1) Eurostar from London to Switzerland (Geneva), train to Italy (Rome & Venice would be only places you would have time to visit), train to Austria, train to Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany (Berlin), Netherlands (Amsterdam), train to France (could do Paris & Montpellier) then get a train from Montpellier to Barcelona then fly to London.

2) Eurostar to Amsterdam, train to Germany (Berlin), train to Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, train to Switzerland, train to Italy (Venice then to Rome), train to Paris then to Montpellier, then to Barcelona (Spain), then fly back to London.

3) Fly to Spain (Barcelona), train to France (Montpellier then to Paris), then train to Switzerland (Geneva), train to Italy (Rome then Venice), train to Austria, train to Hungary (Budapest), train to Slovakia, train to Czech Republic, train to Germany (Berlin), train to Netherlands (Amsterdam) then Eurostar to London.

I would do itinerary 3 as I think it is a more logical route. It would be better if you could choose less places though as only 1 month is very little time in these countries and you will spend most of your time travelling. Even though England is great, if you're wanting to go to all of these places then I would cut down your time in UK and just spend around 3 days seeing the main sights?

For flights you can look on sites such as easyjet.com, ryanair.com, bmibaby.com and the Eurostar goes from London St. Pancras and goes to Paris, Belgium, Switzerland, Netherlands. Here is the link:
http://www.eurostar.com/dynamic/_SvBoExpressBookingTerm?_TMS=1327949506916&_DLG=SvBoExpressBookingTerm&_LANG=UK&_AGENCY=ESTAR&country=UK&lang=UK&VT=EB

I think Norway is too far to travel which is why I haven't included it in the itinerary.

You will definitely need to book the Eurail Global Pass. Here is a link to a map of all of the rail links so you can work out how to get from one city to the next.
http://www.eurail.com/sites/all/files/eurail.com/downloads/2012/eurail-railwaymap-2012.pdf

From my friends who have gone travelling in Europe and from personal experience I would recommend Hungary (Budapest), France (Montpellier, Paris), Spain (Barcelona), Italy (Rome, Venice), Germany (Berlin), Netherlands (Amsterdam) and definitely London!

I hope this helps, let me know if you need any more information.

Thanks,

Sophie

Hi Sophie,

Just went thru your tag and it feels great to share some insights on India...

Diverse culture, different people and wonderful sites Welcome You to Incredible India anytime of the year, and the time chosen by you is the best time to visit any part of the country.

You could do Delhi (spend about a couple of days in Delhi then on to Varanasi (Overnight Train) ... I guess, with the kind of travelling that you have done, you would not want to go for a Tour ... I shall recommend doing it yourself at your own pace... Let me say, it will be Worth it..(only thing to watch for is touts who would want to sell you stuff (Hotel rooms to sightseeing to performing different rituals at a GHAT (The Bank of River Ganges) to buying souvenirs, Just keep a check on it and You are Good to Go...

Thereon, Another Train brings you to Agra (2 Nights at Agra is sufficient to watch the entire city) including The Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort and various different markets...

Agra - Jaipur (By road) - You can buy a VOLVO bus ticket (Nice buses) to go to Jaipur... this way You would also be able to see the countryside when the bus passes through the same....2-3 Nights at Jaipur are sufficient to go around this beautiful Pink City and its near by charming places like Amber Fort etc

Jaipur - Jodhpur can be reached by Train (takes about 4 hrs n 30 mins) and you would land into another majestic city...or the Blue City which has The Mehrangarh Fort... 2 Nights at Jodhpur is all that you need...

Thereon Go to Jaisalmer (again by Train) There is a train called Jodhpur - Jaisalmer Express (Train No 14810) leaves at 23:45 hrs from Jodhpur and reaches Jaisalmer at 0545 hrs in the morning.... here you can visit lots of Forts ... You would not want more than 2 nights in Jaisalmer as well...

Jaisalmer to Udaipur is best advised by Road... I shall suggest to hire a cab/taxi or a GOOD bus...2 nights stop at this beautiful City of Lakes and you would be mesmerized by the various lakes and palaces all along....

You can come to Delhi from Udaipur by catching an Overnight Train (Mewar Express - Train No 12964) is the best bet... Spend another night in Delhi or Go to Jim Corbett National Park for a Safari... come back to delhi...(for corbett you should take a couple of nights into count)...

Then on You should fly down South to Kochi... 1 Night at Cochin(Kochi)...1 Night at Munnar..1 Night at Kumarakom for Backwaters (Do the Overnight Houseboat Stay at Kumarakom and Not at Alleppey... It is more clean at Kumarakom than at Alleppey and the services are also better... From here you can come back to Kochi and then fly to Goa for a Beach Vacation...

Goa is a Paradise in its own way... Lovely City...wonderful people... Beautiful beaches and the famous Goan Parties.... You can spend n number of days or nights here depending upon your leisure as I am sure the city will not Bore You in any way....

Goa to Mumbai can be either by an overnight train or Flight (flt saves time and Train saves Money..lol ).. maybe 3-4 nights in mumbai and then You would be good to head Home... Home Sweet Home as they Say....

I am sure the above info will be of help...:)

You can also connect with me on Facebook (Prashant Sobti)

Write in for any more info...

Cheers !!! :)

Prashant, thank you very very much for your information - that is very useful!

Would it be too awkward to get to Bandhavgarh National Park? Is Jim Corbett National Park a good one?

Are there any budget hostels you would recommend in any of these places? Mostly Delhi as I will need to find somewhere when I first get there...I will arrive around 10.30am (which probably doesn't make much of a difference but anyway!)

Any advice would be much appreciated...

thanks again,

Sophie
