I've booked flights for the US now (yay!), so there's some fixed parameters to work within. At this point, we're thinking that we'll all fly up from SD to Chicago for the weekend of 21/22 April and then will stay a few days after that as well to look around some more. Then from there, it's back to Melbourne. If we can do some family friendly activities during the day, my kids will be in two. Then I'll get them to bed and hang out for drinks after that

I think I'd have a hard time convincing the family to change that plan to Dodge City, Kansas somehow ;) Can we pencil it in for that weekend? I'll probably want to book flights pretty soon to lock in the cheap fares that are available at the moment.

By the way, I have a few inside secrets for reasonably priced hotels in the downtown area. I'll start checking my crystal ball for booking multiple rooms as soon as we start seeing how many members we may have. If all goes well, we may be able to have rooms for under USD$100/night.

I can usually find rooms under $40/nite midweek. Rooms usually more on the weekends. Hard to beat that price anywhere else. I am still lobbying for VEGAS!!

I just checked for a place right bang in the middle between Chicago and LV: Dodge City, Kansas ok for you guys?;)

Might be if you plan on attending. Though, I've been to Dodge City... Then again, I think you've been to Vegas, Chicago and Dodge City.

Only Vegas baby;)
But Chicago is high on my list!

Definitely penciled in for San Chicago for those dates. I'll send out the word. As your e-mail stated, you will probably be arriving at O'Hare on Saturday. Is that correct? (Guess it will depend on the flight from San Diego.) It's also after tax day (April 17th) so hopefully we can entice Anne away from office.

At least we can start looking at hotel rates since it's still low season and Easter will have passed so no special holidays to work around. Kris usually has very good luck with quikbook.com.

We'll be there!

I am really dyslexia this morning. :(

WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Peter - any more word on your arrival in Chicago? I'm going to try to have one of our best friends (Naomi) join us for a dinner. Katie, Heather and friends met her at the last Chicago gathering.

Haven't booked the flight yet, but probably Saturday morning. With the Australian dollar the way it is at the moment, it's a great time to pay for all these US dollar expenses, so I'll lock it in soon

Cool! I realize it is still ~2 months away. If you do arrive on Saturday (and it's an ~ 4 hour flight, then baggage, transportation downtown, hotel check-in etc.), I'm taking for granted it will be noon or later when we do get to gather centrally. Do you also have to pass through immigration/customs when arriving in Chicago, even though the flight of origin was California?

Since Peter has stated he and his family plan to spend an extra few days in the city - a question for attendees. Is anyone able to take Monday off to use as their travel date home? That would give us at least 1.5 days to spend time together. Kris is trying to work that into his plans. I know we can arrive sometime Friday evening and meet people for cocktails and possible nosh/dinner. (Rush hour traffic will be our biggest issue.)

I'm also looking into children friendly activities, such as Navy Pier, so Miles and May are not left out of the mix. (Unlike previous meet-ups, we can't spend our whole time in bars and pubs as someone decided 'spawning' was a good idea. Rumor has it, Peter was a salmon in a former life.)

Kris just said he got an e-mail from quikbooks.com for the Whitehall Hotel for $77/night through April 30th. Problem - it has to be booked by February 17th. He's also looking into the Silversmith Hotel and the Congress Hotel as they are all centrally located. We've stayed at both the Silversmith (boutique and very nice) and the Congress (also is nice and has maintained it's vintage decor as it's been in operation for over a century.)

Off to get more people involved!

Forgot to mention...

Those of us who live in the upper midwest and east coast know that April can be a tricky month for weather conditions. We've had snow storms on those dates and 80F at times. Bring appropriate outerwear. We'll keep checking the weather as time passes and post the forecasts.
