I'm going to try to get Friday afternoon and Monday off (or maybe all day Friday and Monday morning), however that's probably about the worst time this spring for me to be gone from work. Of course, right? Will see what the boss man lets me do.

Kris is was going to try for Monday off and we drive home that afternoon. We'd be able to leave here (probably) late Friday afternoon. Like you - busy time for him too. (Is there ever a really good time?! LOL!) ;) Plus, you have a longer drive than we do regardless of traffic.

Just keep me (us) informed.

Just booked our flights in and out of Chicago. Leaving SD at the crack of dawn on Saturday the 21st and we should arrive in Chicago at 1PM.

Departing Chicago again on Wednesday at 3.50 PM.

Now we just need to work out some accommodation, but those can often be cheaper if booked closer to the date, so I'm thinking maybe we'll wait with that one :)

Are there any particular areas of Chicago that are good to book a place in other than downtown?

Excellent!

As for other areas for booking accommodations - it depends on what you are interested in seeing/doing while there. Skip any of the suburb areas as it will require taking the Metra, EL or a cab to get into the city. Though, the EL (subway) does have multiple ride/day passes for a set fee.

The Lincoln Park area (north of the Loop) may have some deals and it's close to Lincoln Park Zoo. There is also pretty easy access into the heart of the city. There are some hotel deals south of the loop, around Columbia College too. AVOID the Travelodge on Harrison as it's a disaster. (We've stayed there with Phil.) The Congress Hotel is nice and usually has decent specials. Also, the Silversmith, a boutique hotel on Wabash (jewelry row) regularly has specials. We've stayed there twice and the rooms are very nice. It's a converted office building tucked between shops.

Kris keeps getting notices from TravelZoo constantly about specials in and around the city center. Now that we're back, he'll be checking those.

Hope you all have a great time in Chicago, but unfortunately I won't be able to attend.

Just found out from my doctor that after I get back from my already booked trip to Puerto Vallarta, I'll need to have two different knee operations this year that will require me to be on crutches first for six weeks and then again for four weeks. Under the circumstances, this rules out any additional travel plans for this year (not allowed to fly while recovering due to possible blood clotting).

Have a drink or two for me in absentia.

Eeek, sorry to hear it Calcruzer :( Hope the surgery helps in the long run for you though!

Near Lincoln Park does sound like a good idea for accommodation. I still need to do some looking around.

If you're asking whether someone from Nigeria can join our meetup, then yes, absolutely - anyone who can make it to Chicago for those dates would be more than welcome to join us :)

And the weather is pretty much the same now in Chicago as it is in Nigeria anyway Can not believe it: 5th day in a row of 80F or more and counting. There have been a total of like 10-12 days in the 80's during the last 100 years, so I just read. Probably snow during the meet up....;)
