I know that you need a travel permit to go to Tibet. I was considering flying into Tibet while I am in China. It doesn't appear that there are any flights from SW China (Kunming, etc.), so I was looking at Chengdu.
What I hear is that you need to get a permit from a travel agency. Anyone know about the cost? Then is individual travel allowed or do you have to join a group? And what constitutes a group? Several people or a tour?
Is my information correct? If not, someone please correct me. Anyone with some experience there would help a bunch!
Dear sir/madam Srussell, greetings from Kathmandu Nepal. If you are flying from Chengdu to Lhasa Tibet, the flight fare cost is 200 $ u.s. per person from Chengdu to Lhasa Tibet. To do the tours inside Lhasa Tibet, you would need to buy the tour package,it doest not matter whether you are one person or 2 person or more persons, but it would be more cheap for you if you are more than 2/4 person to buy the tour for around Lhasa Tibet. Well to buy the tour package for you from China side to Lhasa Tibnet cost more expensive, but instead it would be cheapper for you if you do buy the tour package for Lhasa Tibet from Nepal side.
[ Edit: sorry, no promotions in the forum please. ]
Dear sir Srussell, the chinese consulte does not give the individual permit to go to Tibet, for this you would need to buy the tour package through Travel Agency to see Tibet,& this is done through the Travel Agency only. Thanks,

I live in Kunming and if you're coming to Kunming, I can put you in contact with a local operator who does overland trips to Tibet. Otherwise, if you wish to fly then Chengdu is the place to go from. Group visa's can be easily arranged in China through travel agents.
If you go to Chengdu, go to the Panda Research Centre! They do some great work, OH and get some "Bouncers" from the stall outside....
Wocca you are soooo lucky to have Bouncers.
i am a chinese, you need a permit.that's for sure, that's a flight from chengdu to lasa city(capital of tibet)the price is about $160
you can travel by yourself, when i journeyed by bike from baotou(inner mongolia china)to lasa last year,i met a lot of foreigners.some of them were alone.
you mean the cost of getting the permission,i guess its $20-40
i dou't know.
Has anyone traveled to Tibet independently?
I am wondering how difficult it was to get transportation between the major cities and points of interests. I haven't done any research yet because I am planning a SE Asia trip (leave in a week), but I may decide to go into China (Yunnan) from Vietnam. From there it seems a hop, skip, and a jump to Lhasa (I would fly).
It looks like the typical trip is Lhasa to Gyangtse to Shigatse to Dingri to Everest Base camp and then into Nepal or return to Lhasa. Nepal's situation is uncertain now. We'll see what it's like in June.
I know you can join groups and rent a vehicle. There appear to be some buses. Can anyone shed some light on Tibet for me?
hi there! how's your SEA trip?hope u are having a lot of fun! i will be in lhasa in the middle of april and is wandering would you be able to make it there at the same time? may be we can check out tibet together!
There are flights from Kunming to Lhasa, or from Zhongdian directly to Lhasa. It's also possible to go by jeep from Zhongdian. In all cases, you need a permit, which you buy when you arrange your transport there.
Is there a direct fly from Kunming to Lhasa OR is it via Chengdu?
