My friend and I are planning to travel from the UK to Houston in late September. We were hoping for some advice on how to travel across Southern USA on a budget. We have an idea of where we want to go, Houston to New Orleans, possibly then on to Florida/Miami. Following that heading towards Philadelphia/ New York. We just want an idea of how much this will cost, especially the cost of travel and if there are places to stay that are affordable in those areas/between those areas.
Any advice will be gratefully appreciated!

On a budget sounds like "rock bottom" to me. Here's the Greyhound Bus ticket info site. Most Americans would prefer to fly on longer distances - here's the Southwest Airlines site.
I would avoid New York if you're on a strict budget - hotels there are not exactly cheap. (I can't afford them, and I live in the US)
Thank you those sites are really useful
If you are serious about New York and are on a budget look at hostels in NY. www.hostelworld.com
Miami is fun especially the night life. I live near orlando so miami is a nice four hours away.
