Everyone seems to recommend different hostels, it's so hard to choose the right one! I have heard good things about space and the nunnery but I suppose they will all be awesome.

When in may do you arrive? Yeah iv heard st kildas is the place to be!

I know, it's a big decision especially when you're going on your own! I definitely think it is what you make of it thought, so like you say I'm sure they'll all be awesome!

I'm looking for a flight at the moment but I'm planning the first couple of weeks in May. I'm having trouble deciding between getting a one way (ideal) or a return (just in case I want/need to come home and as this is also a requirement of the WHV...)

What did you do? Who are you flying with? STA are mega cheap at the moment for a one way but I know people have had mixed experiences with them. So many decisions!

Iv booked a one way flight, I'm also going on a whv but as long as you show you have the funds to buy a ticket home they will accept that. Then il worry about getting home when the time comes.

Sta travel are totally fine, iv booked with them before and they were good. I'm booked with Singapore airlines with opodo got a really cheap flight.

Are you going on your own to?

hey all, I was in the same boat few days back, but I booked in a hotel for 3 nights then moved to a sharing house, there is other options better than hostels I guess, try easyroommate or airbnb websites sometimes they have really good offers and more reasonable prices, specially for long term stays.
wish you all luck :) please wish me luck in finding a job too :)

Brilliant, I'm going to call them today and have a chat. Hopefully I can book it ASAP so it'll feel real.

Yes, I'm going on my own too. Feeling a bit nervous about it, I've travelled before but never solo so it's nice to know other people are in the same boat!

Thanks for last comment, mmw04, I only plan to stay in a hostel for the first couple of weeks. Once I find a job I'm hoping to move into different accommodation. Thanks for the websites though, they'll definitely help. Good luck!

Hey

I'm travelling to Melbourne on my own on 23rd May! I booked a return flight with Emirates from the Flight Centre and got a good deal. I've just sorted my whv and plan to work up the east coast maybe using the greyhound service before finding work anywhere. Pretty nervous about going on my own too but glad to know lots of other people do it. Sarahem, we look to be going around the same time so maybe we could meet up!

Hi Harriet,

Yes definitely! I think I'm going to be going on 2nd May, so I'll be there a little bit before you but I would be up for meeting up. How long are you staying for? Do you have any other plans?

Cool! I'm going to Thailand for a month before with my friend then heading to Melbourne alone. I'm going to stay in Aus for a year and plan on finding work after seeing the east coast (plan to move upwards fairly quick because of the temperatures at that time of year!). Ideally I'd like to find a flatshare as I reckon that'd be fun. For the first few nights I'm going to book into either Habitat or Hotel Discovery then see what happens from there! I looked into things like the Oz experience but heard mixed reviews and reckon it'll be easy enough to meet people with a Greyhound pass. How long are you going to stay? Do you have any plans yet?

Have you been to Thailand before? If not you'll love it, I spent a month there a couple of years ago on my first RTW trip and had an absolute blast. I'm jealous!

At the moment my plan is to spend a year in Oz then a year in NZ but if I really love Oz I'll make sure I get my second year visa too and do NZ after that.

I haven't planned very much to be honest, I'm trying to wing it as much as possible! I did the east coast on my last RTW trip so I'd love to do WA and the Northern Territory because I've never been but the east coast is so much fun I would love to do it again. I definitely want to spend some time in Queensland because it's beautiful. I'll maybe spend a couple of months in Melbourne (also would love to rent a room somewhere/flatshare like you say) before travelling around a bit. I think a year might be a bit ambitious to do everything I want to do so I might just have to go for the second year visa!

I almost did Oz experience last time I was there but I found it was really inflexible so me and my friend ended up getting a camper van instead. This time I reckon I'll do the same as you and use the Greyhound if and when I need to. So it sounds like some of our plans are pretty similar!
