Things are not cheap in Bali because too many tourists. If you find time drop into Thailand ( nearby country) the prices are fantastic make sure u bargain. I bought many handicraft table lamps and house decorated items, clothing dirt cheap , good cheap massages almost everything. hope it helps :) Happy holiday.

I spent 3 1/2 months in Bali bout 3 yrs ago.. Where in Bali you go depends very much on what you are looking for. If you are up for partying then you'll enjoy Kuta which is kinda like the Australians Ibiza. It is however slightly more expensive than other parts of Bali, that in mind though you can still get basic accommodation on the cheap and cheap food if you head away from the beach, there's a big market where the locals go for food, it's amazing and cheap but no backpackers seem to go there although its perfectly save. Elsewhere around Bali , you may want to head to Ubud which is at the centre of the Island, it is cheaper than Kuta but still slightly expensive for food, however you can get good accommodation much cheaper. It is the culture capital of Bali and a nice place to hand out - a good tip don't waste your money paying to the enter the "monkey forest" there - it's expensive and a waste of money, all it is, is a lot of monkeys jumping on tourists who feed them bananas. Rather if you insist on seeing the monkeys (which can be seen all across the island anyway) then walk on the back path around the monkey forest, which is free and you'll see just as many monkeys.. You may also want to head to the East Coast of Amed, Tulamben and so, it's a nice and quiet place, however food is not really backpacker budget minded, the beaches there are however amazing and if you are in to adventure then you'll enjoy diving the rest of the wreck of the USS liberty which is a great dive. On the north of the Island you have Lovina, which is also close to the waterfall Git Git which is very popular amongst tourists.. I wouldn't bother with Lovina but rather head to the old capital which is just down the street from Lovina, but where no tourists come, food is great and accommodation cheap, also for the waterfall, don't take the tourist route if you must see it, rather go further up the mountain and there's the less touristy route to the waterfall, with no one hazzling you, no cost to get to the waterfall and way more quiet and beautiful. However for the most tranquil way to exploring Bali i'd heard to the west area - the area of Tabanan - it's very cheap, you can get great local food at food stalls and so and good basic accommodation at homestays, there's not a lot of tourists and there's some extremely beautiful scenaries, rent a bike and drive around Penebal north of the city of Tabanan (in the district of Tabanan) - the views are stunning.. You can then easily drive through the west and up to the north to end up at Lovina or vice versa and have a great trip. If you don't want to rent a bike, getting around wiv publiv transport is fairly easy as well, just make sure you agree a price and only get in if the "bus" is full of locals already as then you are assured it will follow a route - also prepare to pay about twice that of the locals...
Judging by your screen name you appear to be female so another good idea is to learn a few phrases of Indonesian (just memorize a couple) - I often get harrassed pretty much anywhere in the world as i'm blonde and tall, but I have found that pretty much anything you can say to them in their own language makes them shut up and apologize for harrassing you as then suddenly you aren't just a stupid tourist, but someone who had the decency to learn a few words of their language, it really gets you far, also in other situations... lonely planets indonesian book is worth gold...

I love Bali and have been there many many times. I found it cheaper and better value than Thailand, plus the people are warmer and more welcoming. Agree with Jasmine that it greatly depends on what type of holiday you're looking for...if you like the night life etc, stay in Kuta...if you prefer something more sedate but still with access to shopping/restaurants, look to Legian and Seminyak. For quieter spots, possibly Candidesa or Lovina up north.
If you can be a bit more specific about what you would like from a holiday to Bali, I'd be happy to help with any information that I have.
Cheers
Kim
