I'm going to Austrailia soon, wondering about travelling to New Zealand to giving that it's so close.
But then i have to know, is there anything to do there? and if, in which of the cities because i'm staying there for quite a long time?

You don't go to New Zealand for the cities (though they are nice enough). You go to New Zealand for nature. A significant part of the country consists of National Parks, covering almost every type of landscape you can imagine (rolling green hills, volcanic deserts, lush subtropical rainforests, snow capped mountain ranges, glacier-fed lakes, dark green mossy temperate forests, steep-cliffed fjords, etc), which have supremely accessible hiking tracks for every ability, and sights to take your breath away.
You might have seen the Lord of the Rings movies? Every landscape you see in there, you find in New Zealand.

Also, if you want more excitement, New Zealand is a thrill seeker's paradise. Bungy jumping, zorbing, skydiving, black water rafting, etc, etc. Half of them were invented in New Zealand, the others might as well have been.

Then there's some world class vineyards, funky art deco towns (rebuilt in that style after being leveled by a big earthquake), swimming with dolphins, whale watching, glacier hiking (winding your way through blue ice chasms), excellent skiing and snowboarding, and just roads leading through wild and desolate landscapes where you won't see another car for hour's at a time.

As Sander says you don't go to New Zealand for the cities. There is only really Auckland, then Christchurch and Wellington, and Christchurch and Wellington are small.

Also I am not sure where you are from, but New Zealand isn't cheap, it is on a par with or slightly more expensive than England.

There is so much to do in New Zealand, it is a fantastic place. I would advice spending maybe four weeks on the South Island and two weeks on the North. The scenery is fantastic, and there are plenty of adrenaline filled activities to do. Sander has summed it up pretty well in his message.

I know it's not cheap, but i'm not planning on taking so many tours and stuff, mostly look at the country and then i need to know where :)

That's really not how things work in New Zealand. To experience New Zealand, you rent a car or campervan, or travel by bus, going from town to town, stopping off at National Parks and interesting places along the way, but mostly seeing everything along the way. In six weeks travelling that way, you get to cover effectively the entire country (though there's plenty you'll still miss). For example itineraries, see my posts in this thread or this thread (though you'll be able to cover much more ground). Flying internationally from further away than Australia, you'll almost certainly fly into and out of Auckland, but you can just travel south along the length of both islands, and then fly back to Auckland from Queenstown or Christchurch.

hi,

When I was in New Zealand we went flying over Milford sound and queens town. It was breathtaking. Very dramatic Alpine scenery. After that we went to the harbor for a an overnight cruise. there are a lot of local cruise, guides available, very hospitable and accomodating in our needs and our requests. It was an amazing nature trip. It was just beautiful
