Travel Forums General Talk Insurance. It's a minefield. Help!

Hi guys

My wife and I are going backpacking in Oz, New Zealand and south east Asia for a year. I've been looking at travel insurance but everything seems either really expensive or suspiciously cheap. With so many different companies offering all sorts of plans I just wondered if anyone had any recommendations, advice or horror stories?

Any help greatly appreciated, thanks

James

Hi James,

My approach is to focus on the things that matter most to me - for me this is mainly medical, liability and cancellation coverage. Particularly medical, because in some places those costs can bankrupt you. It's one thing to lose the cost of your flight, it's another to have a huge medical bill hanging over you for years and years to come.

Focus on those parts of the policy and read the wording carefully for that. Sometimes you will find a policy will be cheap, but still cover this adequately. They might be cheap because they are not covering other things like lost items as much. For me, that's often an acceptable trade-off. If you don't have overly expensive things with you, then obviously you need less coverage in that department.

Hope it helps.
