Ozintro is great for getting to meet people and when I did it, I ended up travelling the East Coast with most of them. You can use their office for free wifi from 10-5 and they are there for you the whole time you are in OZ.
I agree with taking as much money as you can, while keeping some as emergency back-up money. Don't waste it all on money; I met a few people that stayed in one place and didn't travel anywhere because they kept spending their money on alcohol.
Apply for jobs early, hand out lots of cv's, if you can do office work you will be fine. If you want to work in a bar (depending on state) you will need to do an RSA course, costs about $120 I think, but it's easy for NSW. Ozintro can help set that up.
Backpack or suitcase... well it's up to you, they are both popular with backpackers.
