Hey, can anyone help me explain "osteoplast apoptosis" in laymen's terms? I'm a writer, not a scientist!

Tway, look at your word again. Is it osteoblast (with a b) or osteoclast (with a c). They are two 2 specialized cell types that deal with bone formation and bone reabsorbtion. They play different roles within the body. For a layman's explanation, I need to know which one you really mean. Or, I can give you both.

OOPS! Osteoclast - the ones responsible for removing aging bone. I'm trying to explain how this is involved with rheumatoid arthritis.

You're my ray of sunshine!

Okay, let's see if this helps you...

Apoptosis means "programmed death".

Normally, there is a balance between osteoblasts (OBs), which produce bone tissue, and osteoclasts (OCs), which break down bone tissue. There are more OBs during the growth years and more OCs as we age. But, in the case of RA (rheumatoid arthritis), the OCs take over the whole process. There is an unnatural increase in the production of these cells which causes premature death of bone tissue, resulting in inflammation, generalized bone loss and mass. Basically, RA ramps up the destruction of bone by increasing the number of OCs produced by the body and accelerating the programmed death of bone tissue.

One of the treatments for RA is the use of nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS such as ibuprofen and naproxin). They block the production of new OCs, slowing down the amount of bone loss.

Is this still to technical or can you glean something from it?? Let me know! I will try to break it down more if needed.

I'm going to ignore the whole damn mess for 2 whole days and revisit it all on Monday.

I think we finally put Wocca to sleep!!!

Thank you, isa! Yes, that helps a lot. All I have is a research project synopsis written by a researcher. It's like they don't speak English.

Anyhow, you've confirmed what I've picked up from a few medical sites. I'm on the right track! Thaks so much for your very knowledgeable help!

Tway, you're very welcome. Let me know if you run into any other medically based projects that you need help with. You can get in touch with me directly too. I love this stuff!

Wocca doesn't have to pay tax, so there's no need to stay awake doing tax returns ....
