Quoting Daawgon

I buy small cast or carved animals: a small wooden tortoise from Hoi An, a bronze elephant from Luang Prabang, a marble dragon from Hanoi and a clay dog whistle from Hoi An

I've always regretted not buying that didgeridoo, but they don't come in size small!

That reminds me of another cool souvenir I have. I was in Venice and stumbled upon a tiny glass shop. Like a walk-in closet-sized shop. It was just a guy behind a work table and a bench for people to sit across from him. I was able to sit on the bench and watch him create a glass kitty cat for me. He didn't speak much english but at one point we started making animal noises as he pointed at the different animal figurines. We found out Italy and America have different sounds for different animals His small daughter walked in the doorway and showed me her school workbook for learning english. Now THAT is a souvenir and cool experience all rolled into one.

a fridge magnet... as it reminds me the happy moment i had for the respective places that i have visited and it is visible everyday and not easily be misplaced/ lost.

I misspoke in my first answer...

Fridge magnets are up there with shells, rocks and wind chimes. Latest magnets came from Barbados. Two small shells and 3 big pieces of beach coral came home too. No wind chimes...

Personally the only souvenirs I buy are pins of every city or country I visit and then put them on my travel bag. :)

I guess we are collectors.

We too collect pins and place them on our jackets. Though, I've had a few backs fall off but haven't lost the pins. They're just stuck in a drawer until I find replacement backings.

I also forgot the full-sized country flags. We hang one at the end of our upstairs hallway, and then switch them out. Conch Republic (Key West, Florida) flag has hung there the longest. We switched it up recently and a Jack Rackham pirate flag is adorning the wall at the moment. Felt the need to be 'piratey' for a little while.

Then there are the small bobble-head/bobble-tail turtles, fish and crab used to detect earthquake tremors in assorted countries.

I think my fave souvenir is a hand carved wooden shield from Fiji. About 3ft (1 meter) tall, I had to change my packing scheme to get it home. It still hangs on my bedroom wall.

He, bought one of those too, and it just came up recently in a conversation funnily enough (after not having thought of it in over ten years!)...
