What equipment should I take to Oz?

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific What equipment should I take to Oz?

Jacobean has indicated that this thread is about Australia

Im flying to Sydney with a friend on 28th May for 3 months. We're both chilled out, 19 yr old, male gap year'ers, looking to have a great time. Will be travelling to Canberra to visit a relative for a while, then travelling up the east coast to Cairns somehow (any ideas on the cheapest way to do this are welcome). Im from England, so have no equipment for travelling/doing anything remotely exciting. But I plan on doing everything extreme that I can afford. What are essential buys... and whats worth really splashing out on? Thanks

Hey,
Australia is easy to travel around. At that time of year it will be beginning to cool down by australian standards especially in Canberra so bring some warm stuff. Cheapest way to travel up the coast is by bus or train. Also there are now cheap airlines that service Australia such as virginblue(www.virginblue.com.au) and jetstar(www.jetstar.com.au) they always have really cheap flights and great promotions. As for bus and train travel check out flightcentre.com.au on there sight they have links to all the relevant bus and train companies.

ok cool. When you say warm stuff... are we talking gloves, a scarf and a wooly hat? And by the time we get to Cairns (probably early August) Will it be shorts weather? Coz I know it gets warmer as you get further north in Oz.

Cheers

Hi Jacobean,

The further you travel up the eastern coast of Australia, the warmer it will get. While the cost of travel is relativley cheap by coach or air, you will find that coach travel can generally get you to places you could not fly directly to. You will not need thick jackets, gloves etc...

I would probably suggest that after you have visited Canberra, you should head off to Sydney where you can explore some of the beaches (like Bondi and Manly), see the Blue Mountains & Hunter Valley before setting off for one of the most popular tourist destinations in NSW being Byron Bay. In Byron Bay, you can party to your hearts delight with many other travellers from around the world. After you have or if you do get bored of Byron Bay (you won't)... you are a short trip from the Queensland/ NSW border where you will find Coolangatta, Surfers Paradise and further up to Brisbane.

It would be up to you how you feel about travelling on the road or by air. Travelling by coach from Sydney will take you to locations such as Port Macquarrie, Coffs Harbour etc... which you would no see if you fly however the drive can take from Sydney to Byron Bay just over 10.5 hours. If you fly, the trip from Sydney to Coolangatta would take around 1 hour. You would have to find transport from Coolangatta to Byron Bay.

Next Excellent stop would be Hervey Bay - about 4 hours from Brisbane and much like Byron bay where you could go on some tours to Fraser Island etc...

Wow. Thank you so much for your help. Excellent advice. Iam indebted to you.

I think we will stay in Sydney for a while, and see Byron Bay, as that is where we land in Oz. Then we will Bus out to Canberra, then bus from Canberra to Brisbane and then up the coast, or maybe just fly from Canberra to Cairns, and bus back down to Sydney (where we fly home).

How much do you think you would expect to pay for a single flight for 1 adult, from Canberra To Cairns in June/July?

Thanks for your help.
