Hi Everyone,

My husband and I are looking to travel to Argentina, Peru and Bolivia in May. We want explore for about 5 weeks and would love to get some ideas for this.

We want to try and visit : Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Salta, Iguazu Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, Arequipa, Peruvian Amazon, La Paz, Uyuni, Potosi, Sucre.

I need some ideas on planning. For now, I am planning to fly into Buenos Aires and out of Lima.

Thanks a ton
Niyati

Hi Niyati,

I did a sort of similar trip back in 2006. I had about 3.5 weeks, but visited less places.
Flew into Buenos Aires, 3 nights there, then a flight to Salta, several days there and onwards into Bolivia to Tupiza. Did a 4 day/3 night trip there with Tupiza Tours, they are great and it was a fantastic trip across the southwest of Bolivia, including the Salar de Uyuni, the lakes (with different colours, beautiful!) and staying in a salt hotel. It's relatively cheap and there is no public transport there, so a tour is almost a must.
Then north to La Paz, Copacopbana, Puno/Lake Titicaca, Cuzco/Machu Picchu, then a flight home via Lima.

I would say that with 5 weeks it would be possible to include a few of the other places you mentioned, but you will need to take a flight sometimes, as distances are vast. But with 5 weeks and visiting all the places you mentioned it will be rushing it. I would skip Lima (not interesting) and Mendoza area (interesting but out of the route). I would book a return flight from Buenos Aires to Iguazu and than onwards by flight or bus to Salta.

Have fun!
Michael.

Hi Michael,

Thanks a lot for your reply. Do you suggest flying into Buenos Aires, then to Iguazu and Salta? Is there a way. Is there a way to go from Salta to Bolivia by land?

Which trip in particular did you take with Tupiza. Do you remember the name?

Thanks again, I really appreciate your help!

Niyati

Hi Niyati,

Yes, but I don't think there are direct flights from Iguazu to Salta, so you should fly again via Buenos Aires.

From Salta, there are buses to the border (La Quiaca) and you cross on foot (kilometre or so) and take another bus (or train, depending on the day) from Villazon (Bolivia side) to Tupiza. Total takes like a little more than half a day or maybe 6-7 hours, but just start after breakfast and you will be fine.

I don't remember the trip's name exactly but I would certainly go for the longer trips, like 3-4 days and not the short ones.

Cheers
Mike
