What type of backpack?

Hi,

I'm starting to plan my trip to travel the world for a year or however long my 'wish list' takes me to finish. I want to start late August/early September this year so I won't have to pack thick clothes for freezing weather

A year and a half ago I travelled around Europe for a month with some friends and took a 50 litre backpack with me. About 1 week in, I realised I packed far too much. Hopefully the replies I get will give me a rough idea what type of backpack to purchase and brands that make good long lasting quality backpacks.

The equipment I will be taking are:

1x GOPRO HD Hero2
1x Cannon 40D + lens
1x iPad
1x Kindle
1x iPhone
1x Day backpack (Cotton material, super light and when packed it's as small as 4 DVDS stacked together)
1x 24cm Mini tripod

When I travel through Europe I will be purchasing a tent and sleeping bag, but I won't be needing a backpack that can fit a them in it. As soon as I reach Asia I will be staying in hostels (or unless anyone recommends some really nice camp sites in Asia, but again I will just purchase a tent and sleeping bag there and then)

The best type of backpack is one that fits. Go to your local sporting goods store, try some on, then look around online for the best price.

My favorite brand is Lowe Alpine. But, that's because I like the fit. Most of the brand names you've heard are durable enough. Just pack some duct tape.

Your wish list is extensive. Europe is relatively easy to breeze through. If you want to cover the remainder of the countries in a year, be prepared to take a lot of flights. Slow travel: buses, public transit, trains, overland... might impede your progress.

I'm going to travel half the countries and take twice the time. Will be in SEA late 2012, early 2013. Drop me a PM if you're still in that area.

I'm carrying a 50l pack as well. But it includes tent, sleeping bag & pad. So, you should only need a 40l if you're not packing those things.
