Having had a craving for South America for a number of months now, I've resigned from my job and am ready to book a flight!
The only problem is, I don't know were to go.
I've been to Buenos Aires previously, loved the the food/weather/nightlife and would love to visit again. At the same time, I only hear good things about Colombia - friendly people, clear crisp spanish, and a more "South American" feel.
So, I am now very conflicted. I feel like I can go back to Buenos Aires and it'll be easy - it's familiar, nonthreatening, and I know that I like it. On the other hand, the idea of going to Colombia scares me - despite being told on countless occasions that it's safe and "the only danger is not wanting to leave", I can't help but fear that I'm going to get kidnapped or involved in one of those "small-scale bombings", as Lonely Planet puts it. That said, the people are meant to be amazing, and while I love Buenos Aires, I've found that the people can be a bit inaccessible (excuse the generalisation). I found myself mostly hanging out with other foreigners in BA, whereas I would have loved to spend more time with the locals.
Things to note about me - I'm 25, female, travelling alone, Australian, on a budget and am looking to bum around for 3-4 months (longer if I can).
Sorry about the vagueness of this post I'm a bit lost at the moment - any advice hugely appreciated!
"... I can't help but fear that I'm going to get kidnapped..."
First of all, stop reading/listening to old news that's years and years and years out of date.
Colombia is an absolutely fabulous destination and with the usual common sense and street smarts most areas of the country are considerably safer than many other parts of Central/South America.
Thanks for the response Terry.
Any other suggestions, anyone? At the moment I'm leaning towards going to both..... Looks like some super-long bus journeys are in order!

I lived in Colombia for two years. I loved every second of it......It has terrific and varied places to go. It has the Caribbean. It has cheap living and great beer and beautiful women. It doesn't take that long to fly there. They have very clear Spanish. They have great music.
Argentina has SOME of those things. Go to Colombia. Stay away from the Gap and the Western Jungle. The Americas just had a meeting in the town where I lived. Obama is staying in the place where I used to go to the gym....It can't be that dangerous. Colombia, absolutley.
"... Columbia is not dangerous at all..."
That is not true. You have to use common sense and street smarts everywhere in Central/South America, Colombia included.
PS Note correct spelling of country name. There's no "u" in Colombia.
It is in my experience that you regret the things you haven´t done more than the things you have.
Take the plunge, go to Colombia and I hope you have fun!
I will be in Colombia myself soon and know many who have visited, I have heard nothing but positive experiences.
Although, I'm loathe to say I can't speak from experience - Having travelled to most countries in Latin America but having missed out on Colombia I regret it. Everyone (without exception) who I know who has travelled in Colombia raves about it. I'm currently in Peru but I know I need to arrange time to visit Colombia soon.
I agree with Nayzee and Rebel - try something new ..... Argentina isn't going anywhere if you want to return one day !!
I've taken your advice and decided on COLOMBIA!
I'm flying into Bogota in 1.5 weeks (leaving May 3).
I'm terrified. But that's probably a good thing.
If anyone will be around at that time, we should hang out! PM me!
