Desperate to work abroad, unhappy in London

Travel Forums Europe Desperate to work abroad, unhappy in London

moomin82 has indicated that this thread is about Seville

I'm a 30 year old professional, burnt out and fed up with my lack of career/job prospects in London at the moment.
I have a real unsatisfied wanderlust and last year quit a full time job to go studying Spanish in Salamanca.
I had the best 6 weeks of my life, but funds ran out fast and I came back with the plan to find more work and save for the next opportunity to go abroad.
It's my dream to live and work in Spain, France and South America.
I have no money at all, or even savings, and only a part-time call centre job paying £60 a week.
I was just offered a business internship in Spain, it would be 4 months, unpaid but expenses/accommodation is included. I've not decided whether to go or not because I am worried about running out of money.
I only have £200 left in the bank and a credit card but if I used that it would incur some debts I am not even sure I could meet the minimum payment after my bills come out at the end of the month. I have spent my 20's in a range of jobs but only recently found a love for travel, learning Spanish and wanting to work abroad, ideally helping others and travel writing.

I'm back living with parents, very unhappy and just want to get away. The internships I've seen look ok but I would struggle with no pay. I'd also love to do some volunteering in South America, but I can't afford to get there yet. In London if I stay here I only have the telesales job which is a really painful way to earn very little money.

I've considered teaching English for better paid work but I am a lousy teacher. Please advise, I am losing all hope :(

Hi Moomin,

if you discovered your love for travel, how about working as a guide? When I was in Barcelona Spain I joined a "free walking tour" and our guide was also from the UK. He worked only on tips (hence the word "free" in "free walking tour") but probably got around 80€ in total for a 2 hours walking tour. If you are located in a place that attracts many tourists it´ll probably be enough to pay for the basic live expenses.

Hi,

Well it is difficult as essentially you need at least a bit of money behind you to start to travel. I think your only option is to keep job hunting for a better job in London and as soon as you get that start saving again to travel.

By the sounds of it the business internship in Spain will be impossible to go through with if you only have £200 left in the bank.

When you have a bit more money behind you you could consider getting your Working Visa for NZ, Australia or Canada (I’m not sure how many days left until you are 31!?). Or you could try a TEFL course and see how you get on, you might be better than you think.

I got back from 18 months travelling about a year ago and am back at home with my Dad. I’m 32, but the good thing is I now have a decent job and can save a lot of money each month so I know that I should be able to go away again in a couple of years for a considerable amount of time.

So essentially I am saying keep looking for a permanent job in London and once you have that set yourself a timeline of when you want to travel again. Save really hard and you will be able to do it.
