I am hoping to travel around North America starting August 2013. I am pretty open as to where to go, however I am hoping for some advice from people who may have done a similar trip before.
I am hoping to start in New York, to stay in hostels and to travel around from there. I will be travelling alone and wondered if anyone could give me advice on how to meet travelling partners whilst in America. I've been told that staying in hostels is a good way to meet new people and find casual work...could anyone share any experiences of their trips to reassure me? If anyone has any tips for me also this would be great
If you have not heard about 'couchsurfing', take a look. Stay for free with someone that lives in that city? Hard to beat that for meeting new people. Good lick with your planning.
Thanks I have had a look! Should be a great help
The USA is an awesome and easy place to travel as a solo female. I did it twice after summers spent as a camp counselor. Americans are pretty friendly people and will strike up conversations with you in all sorts of places - bus stops, train stations, in cafes/restaurants etc etc, and these conversations will often lead to invitations home for dinner or even to stay at their place while they be your tour guide of their city! I spent part of my first summer there on a Trek America tour, which was a great way to cover some major sights and meet fellow travellers. I know organised tours arent for everyone, but when you're new to travelling they ease you in quite nicely Go for it, you definitely won't regret the experience and I really enjoyed travelling on my own!
Hey, i'll be in New York in Jan, travelling alone as well Lets find a college party!
At least you have lots of time to plan your trip. Hostels in general are great places to meet like minded travelers. As you mention North America, I assume you have an intention to visit Canada and Mexico as well. I'd like to suggest you consider starting in Toronto or Montreal, Canada. There are more BackPacker hostels in these cities than in NYC, mostly full of travelers from overseas. You might be more successful in finding a person or people to share a journey. Also, if you're from one of the British Commonwealth nations, it is easier to find temp work in Canada. Another thing to consider is if you plan to see national parks in the Rockies, by mid to late September there could be snow (good if you're a skier, bad if you're a hiker), so perhaps heading west shortly after arriving is something to consider. Again, finding travelers heading that way is considerably easier in the eastern Canadian cities as most just blow past the center of the nation.
In the mean time, there are any number of travel sites which offer forums for finding travel companions. And then there's CouchSurfing for places to crash. Where to go and what to see in such a vast continent depends on what you like. The natural beauty is amazing, but August quickly leads to autumn - cooler temps and rain/snow. The places I would recommend to anyone coming to North America are Quebec City, British Columbia, San Francisco and Oaxaca in Mexico. Please consider posting again with more specific ideas regarding your travel plans and I'm sure the folks here can give more assistance.
Hi Danielle, I am also looking to go on my own in the summer and really need some advice - from a girl, esp as you've travelled alone before.. I have literally tried to research every possible way without much luck. Hope you've managed to get your trip sorted.
I'm actually going to New York in Aug on my own and I'm planning on travelling coast to coast. I found this site after searching on Google for tips on coast to coast travel. Have you a rough idea of places you want to see or visit etc...........
I've been looking at the Amtrak (America's rail service) it's pretty affordable and you get some good deals on special passes for multiple stops. Like you I'm hoping to meet people along the way and hopefully travel to some places with other people.
Maybe we could help each other seeing as we're both setting off for New York in Aug I arrive on the 19th, I've been looking at hostels but not booked anywhere yet. They all seem to be charging peak prices but the trouble with travelling solo is that you still have to pay for a double occupancy regardless so hence I'm on here trying to buddy up with someone in order to half the cost.
Hello Guys, I need some suggestions to travel in India. Please help me out.
