tsweety has indicated that this thread is about Thailand

Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase train tickets for travel in Thailand in advance.
I would like to travel direct to Chang Mai from the train station at the airport in a 1st or 2nd class sleeper.
Thanks in advance

It's been a while since I've been on the train, but I think you can pay for a ticket in 10 days advance at any train station. For schedules, maps rates and other assorted goodies from the SRT (State Railway of Thailand) website: http://www.railway.co.th/Eng/

Cheers,
Mike D.

Hi,
You can certainly book tickets in advance - in person.
I booked tickets from Bangkok to Surat Thani when I was in Bangkok, at a travel agents shop. I then went to Kanchanaburi for a week before coming back to get the sleeper train.

Thankyou for the replies,
I should have made my question clearer
I would like to buy a train ticket before I get to Thailand, either to pick up when I get there, or get it posted to England.
Does anyone know if this is possible.
Thanks

have you thought about getting the bus rather than the train? from what i've heard from people out here it's much quicker and cheaper.

Hi, I've tried to do that before, but it is not possible (this was confirmed by a friend who lives in Bangkok). I searched the internet and found a company that was willing to purchase tickets in advance and deliver to your hotel when you arrive...for a fee of course. Also, payment must be made on booking.

Check out http://www.thaifocus.com/travel/train/bookrail.htm

I took the overnight train from BKK to Chaing Mai , it cost like $30US. In Chaing Mai, I talked to a bunch of people who flew from BKK to Chaing Mai for the same price. Maybe you want to check that out as the overnight train is all in the dark except for a couple of hours after sunrise, right outside Chiang Mai.

If I had to do it again, and especially if I was at the airport already, I'd take a plane.

Just today I looked up tickets to Chaing Mai from Bangkok for the first week of April and they are in fact approx. $30-$35 one way of course. I will be taking a flight instead of the train ride. Check out:
