Why is the edit so big and bold. It stands out more than the message itself, lolding that I made a mistake":)

You mean the edit text under the message or the Edit link? If the text, then that's partly because it's the same area used by mods, and it also makes sense to highlight any changes made after a post has been published.

Yeah, pretty much for the reasons Sam mentioned.

It doesn't make quite so much sense for regular edits, but for moderator edits it seems important to highlight what's going on.
