The Pan American Highway is now connected (by ferry) from Colon, Panama To Cartengena, Columbia!
You don't need to ship your RV or Car anymore ...just put it on the ferry and go along with it!! A savings of thousands in airfare and hotels on both sides, The ferry is suppose to start on the 10th of May! Just the greatest thing on the Pan AM!!!!!
We are going to be in Panama in August with the trekoftheamericas doing the USA/Argentina expedition in a RV (caravan vehicle) and taking about 5 months with another 7 or 8 rvs. We will be starting in the USA. This news of the ferry is so welcomed!!!! A savings of both time and money...If anyone need info ..let us know..
It'll be at least June before this is open to the public.

Prices are very misleading with taxes/surcharges and no one-way tickets. It'll be interesting to see what a car costs...
That's great and it makes easier for travel and transporting goods.
The target date for the opening is May 10th, 2012.....we know how that goes? lol... But, who knows, the Panama Tourist Bureau (IPAT) is really promoting this!!!
The target date is indeed May 10th - but not for the general public. Their first opportunity would be June. That's coming straight from the ferry company.
I will hopefully be boarding sometime in late August making a trekoftheamericas trip to the End of the World, Ushuaia, Argentina... it should have all the bugs worked out by then, including the customs procedures of both countries! What a great addition!
I remember the past ferry trip back in the 90's...even included a Las Vegas style show and dinner aboard! The cabins were also very pleasant! At that time the shipping cost for the small motorhome was only $500, and the arrival in Columbia took less that 2 hours for all the paperwork.
I really wish this venture the best of luck!
Any updates on the ferry or is It just an urban legend?
GOVERNMENT RED TAPE..
IT is in the hands of the PANAMA ADUANA ADMINISTRATION.... THE WHEEL TURNS SLOW, MAYBE WE OUGHT TO MAKE IT SQUEAK A BIT, with letters to IPAT (Pan tourist Comm) and to the government..!
It's a lot more complicated than that rvcampertravele, Panamanian Aduana is one small piece in a much larger issue...
