I stayed in quite a flashy a hostel in St Kilda called Habitat HQ. We had to get the tram from the centre of the city and walk quite a way down the main street once at St Kilda, but like other's have said, Australia is a really easy place to navigate because you can always just ask for directions and help.
Once we arrived there was a bulliten board with part-time jobs aimed specifically at hostel dwellers, so you'll be able to find something I'm sure, and I don't think many people go out with a 'travellers job' lined up or anything.
Other than that, you should have a chippie on St Kilda beach at sunset - really nice
yeah true, I guess no body goes there with a "travelers job" lined up or something, but If you can find something to do part time while you have some spare time during your travels--- its going to bring in some extra cash which will be very useful. The bulletin board you mentioned is a great way to find some thing to do and earn some.
