East Coast Road Trip in Campervan - 3 months. Buy or Rent?

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific East Coast Road Trip in Campervan - 3 months. Buy or Rent?

Hi

My boyfriend and I are planning to travel from Melbourne to Cairns by campervan on a 3 month trip to Australia arriving end January. We are choosing campervan option as the accommodation seems so expensive and we really want to experience the 'road trip' way whilst in Australia. I have looked at both renting and buying a campervan, I'm thinking buying seems to be the way to go. Is this as straight forward as they say it is and how hard and how long is it likely to take to sell when we wish to leave?

Any comments would much appreciated.

Thanks

Ashleigh

For 3 months I'd probably go with renting. If you buy you'll need to worry about registration which requires an Australian postal address, you'll also need to think about insurance and selling it when you've finished travelling, how long it takes to sell will depend on price and demand in Cairns. Because you're travelling between states the state in which your van is registered will be different to the state you end up in which might make it more difficult to sell.
