Hey guys, basically I've two weeks/two and a half weeks in July to get from Budapest overland to Athens and I'm looking for suggestions for 4/5 nice/cool places to stop along the way...there are so many routes I can't decide, I'd love some help from you guys, thanks!!!!
Any suggestions guys...I know SOMEONE must have a bit of knowledge about these countries!!!! Thanks, Ian
We went from Balaton Lake Hungary via Osijek, Novi Sad, Belgrade, to Macedonia enjoyed Skopje , Stip and Ohrid.
Found Northern Croatia,Serbia and Macedonia very welcoming. We drove in a motorhome (RV / Camper)
If you are more specific about your mode of transport likes / dislikes etc. maybe one could be more specific!!
Well, I haven't been there myself, but if I were you I'd pass through Transylvania (western Romania). It has some beautiful old walled cities, castles, lots of forest and mountains. And, of course, Dracula's castle...
Make sure you save some time at the end of your trip for Athens. It's a truly amazing city- worth spending at least 2-3 days there.
I can suggest that you visit Macedonia, visit Skopje the capital, then maybe Ohrid also, and there are some other intersting too, depending on your interests. And then continue to Greece.
Also, before that, you may visit Serbia, Belgrade the capital... from there go to Montenegro (beautiful sea, mountains) from there you can get bus to Skopje...
Or another option, go to Croatia - Zagreb, from there to Adriatic sea - choose any city and take the road by the sea, travelling south and visit beautiful cities, towns along and swim in the sea. This way you can reach Montenegro, from there (for ex. from Budva) take some bus to Macedonia, or maybe Albania...
If you travel in the summer, there should be good connections to travel around, the accomodation on the sea might be more expensive, but I believe you can everywhere find some good hostel or private room.
If you are crossing Serbia, you should definitely go to the Tara mountain-national park Mokra Gora and visit "Drvengrad" ( made by Kusturica).
