Travelling from South to Central America alone!!

Hi There!!

Has anyone ever travelled from South, Central to North America? Any advice on itinerary would be great! I'm not quiet sure where to start from, I was thinking either Buenos Aires or Rio, Sao Paulo . I have an unlimited amount of time but of course a limited budget. I want to take my time and I was planning on using only buses, boats and trains to cross borders and travel within the country. I might consider flying from Columbia to Panama if there is no other safe option. I am also open to adding other destinations to the trip like Venezuela or any islands that maybe near by. I plan traveling cheap using hostels and maybe couchsurfer through some places. My trip starts in July 2012!! and ends whenever. If anyone else is planning on traveling through some of these countries during the same time and would like some company let me know and we can chat on Facebook! Covering the major points of interest are my goals and anything in between is an added bonus!!

Any advice on hostels, routes to take, and money would be great!!

I just traveled Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador (flight to Cancun) then overland to Guatemala and Mexico. It's totally do-able. Word of warning...bus rides are very LONG (and sometimes a little scary).

I didn't have any issues with border crossings. My biggest recommendation would be to LEARN SPANISH if you don't already have a grasp on it.
