My mate and I are leaving to travel around the world in May, and will be in Europe from mid June till about November. We are planning to work in London for about 3 months before boarding Eurail and travelling around the rest of Europe.
Firstly, I was hoping that someone would be able to suggest a good starting point, keeping in mind that we inteed to see Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Greece, and then a rough iterniary that wont exceed the 15 days travelling time within 2 months. Also, we dont mind flying to reach some destinations as we are getting an Around the World ticket and still have a few stopovers and miles left.
Secondly, I was hoping that you guys could help me out with some 'Must Do's' in each country and how to keep costs down. I have a copy of Lonely Planet's Europe on a Shoestring, but I need some more specific ideas.
If anyone can help, I would much appreciate it.
Since wintertime starts very early in Scandinavia I would suggest to start in Norway and proceed in southern direction.
But if you could decide to travel first and afterwards start working in London, I would suggest to start in Greece and move north/westward. Europe in summertime is so much more enjoyable than in wintertime, at least in my opinion and the Mediterranean is one of the best places to be in summertime, so don't miss that!
Concerning Germany I'd recommend you to visit Munich's worldfamous Oktoberfest which starts mid September till mid Oktober.
holland : amsterdam and giethoorn
belgium : brugge and namur
germany : rothenburg and munich
france : colmar and collioure
tjech-rep. : praha and cesky-crumlov
i'm sure you will love all these places !
greetigs from belgium !
Well, since i started this thread, my mate and i have planned our route through Europe and is as follows;
- Fly from London to Oslo
- Oslo to Stockholm on train (travelling around Norway and Sweden first)
- Fly from Stockholm to Athens via Warsaw
- Train through Greece, up through Italy, then down to Spain back up to France, Belgium, Netherlands, though Germany ending up at Frankfurt
- Fly to Asia from Frankfurt.
We have about 2 months to do this Europe leg as we are getting the Eurail Fleixpass Train ticket.
If anyone has any more suggestions on places to visit or countires that are must see's that i have missed let me know, as we are flexible with destinations, and are sure that our plans will change anyway.
