nana has indicated that this thread is about Brazil

I am from India. I need to know more information about your beautiful country, Brazil. I am planning to visit Brazil in the near future because I have some of your currency - the Brazilian Real. I have it in the 1000 denomination. I have a hundred notes of your Reals in the 1000's denomination totalling to BRL 100,000 with me in India. I need to change them to USD or Euro. I was told nobody (no money changer or banks or foreign exchange person) deals in Reals in India or in Singapore or in any country nearby. I was asked to go to Brazil to get it changed. Hence my trip.

So could you please check and let me know if the 1000's denomination in Reals exists and if so how to get it changed. How much would I get in USD or Euro in exchange. Please post me the details. I would appreciate your kind help. Thanking you,

Hi Nana:

Please see the following link regarding the denominations of the Brazilian Real.

The highest denomination is 100. What you may actually have is the last incarnation of Brazilian Currency --- the Brazilian Cruzado or Cruzeiro. In this case I would contact the closest "Banco do Brasil" and ask them what you can do with them. When Brazil changed over to the "Real", I believe they gave everyone a window of opportunity to convert their cruzados into "real" or "reais" (pl).

But the Bank should be able to tell you if they are worthless or not.

Good Luck! or Boa Sorte! as they say in Brazil!

[ Edit: sorry, no promotions please ]

Thank you so much for yr quick response. Yea........pls check with the Bank and let me know if we could exchange it. I spoke to Guarduanfx in Canada, by following the phone no. inthe link you had provided me. The guy there said - the 1000's denomination reais is now 'garbage'. Pls help me out on this. Thanks a lot once again.

I think the guy in Canada told you the truth. The money that you are holding is not in circulation and is probably worthless. You might try calling the Bank of Brazil yourself.

The Bank is called "Banco do Brasil". I am sure you can find a branch by doing a search on google.

best regards - jill

I did a google search, got hold of the bank's phone no. in Los Angeles and spoke. They said the old currency is useless now. Cant change it too. Maybe keep as a collectors item or a souvenir. Thats all I can do with it. Anyway thanks for your help.

What business are you into ?
