Hello everyone,

I'm a 24 year old female from London and looking to do my first trip alone to Southeast Asia mid November.

I've never travelled before, and I am really exciterd, but pretty nervous too!

I want to try and steer clear of joining a tour group, as I don't want to be restricted, so would be good to know if anyone else is out there around this time?

My initial plans would be to fly to Bangkok, travel to Chaing Mai, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and then do some island hopping around thailand, and possibly onto Maylaisia, but I want to keep these plans pretty loose as I have a tendency to change my mind :-)

Get in touch if you're thinking of heading that way.

Stacey xx

In November, about 100,000 British people will go to Thailand. Most of the Thai people you come into contact with will speak some English. They have Tesco, Boots and some other British stores there as well as two English language newspapers. So a well trodden route.

Mid-November is a good time to go as not too hot (though air conditioning is good as nights are almost as hot as days) and just in the tourist season so not too busy.

Now is a good time to book a flight if you have not done so. kayak has a good selection. Non-direct as in a few hours in some airport on the way out and back are cheapest and changing even by as little as one day can save you money.

Khao San Road has some travel agents for getting around. Opposite one end, near Burger King is an Air Asia office who can book you fairly cheap flights. Taxis are cheap and metered in Thailand, though buses are easy to use (you can pick up a Bangkok map with buses, etc in KSR.)

If you arrive in Thailand by air you get 30 days visa free. By land and you get 15 days. These include day of arrival and day of departure. You can leave and come back, leave and come back, etc.

You'll find Chiang Mai pleasantly cool and quiet after Bangkok.

Do be careful of pick pockets, especially in Bangkok. Do be careful of accepting drinks and don't leave a drink someone can put anything in if leaving your table for any reason. It is very rare but sometimes bad things happen.

One word of advice when dealing with the locals in Asia. Patience.

Thinking about Vietnam, it is the first time you travel to SE continent, you will discover many things in here. In my opinion, you shouldn't go to many countries in short time. You will find it is very boring. You should go to one or two countries. Because you know, there are many beautiful places in one country. For ex, coming Vietnam. You can enjoy wonderful view in Nha Trang beach, Ba Na Hill, Hoi an or Ha long bay which is one of wonder worlds. You also do not spend much money in Vietnam. From Vietnam, you can easily travel to Lao and Cambodia by train, bus or air. So, decide it on your own.

kers300, it might be possible to last for 4 weeks on that budget, but I would try to have a bit more as a safety cushion as possible. Some people spend quite a bit more, but if you're good with money then €800 might be okay for four weeks. It depends how much travelling you do though, and whether you're okay staying in budget hotels.

kers300 - you'll need more money - this is 2012, not 2008! INFLATION

It might last 3 weeks if you only eat bananas
