This year’s destination is Sri Lanka! I am travelling with my entire family so, we need great accommodation and a good plan! We want to spend most of our time in Colombo. As far as we know, it is the best option we have in Sri Lanka. I would appreciate some suggestions to give us a heads up!
You will find a mixture of cultures in Colombo. Some of the most important landmarks there are the Independence Hall, St. Paul's Church Milagiriya, the Galle Face Green, the Edwardian style old General Post Office and the National Museum of Colombo. All of them are very well connected, so do not worry about the transportation! Just buy a map!
I wouldn't recommend spending most, or even much, of your time in Colombo. It's a big city, a few sights to see, and friendly people... but after a day or two you should move on to see some of the highlights of Sri Lanka. I was very happy to spend just an afternoon roaming around Colombo.
Things I really liked - Sigirya, Kandi, Pinnawalla Elephants, and Galle. Anuradhapura is a good choice, though when I was there it rained so hard we couldn't sightsee and missed everything, so I can't vouch for it. If you like beaches, I really liked Mirissa.
In Colombo I stayed in Negombo near the airport. It's a very relaxed part of the city and recommended, though it's not convenient to Colombo sightseeing.
Deffo, you have to get out, I did not stay long in Colombo long myself, two places outside Colombo which I liked was Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage & Lions Rock.
If you have seen most of Sri Lanka you will not find Colombo to be as interesting, that's for sure. I stayed in Colombo for a week because I managed to find a great deal for a hotel at RihlaPrime. I am the type of person that prefers to sleep in a luxurious bed than see more landmarks. I believe there is time to see everything in a lifetime! I enjoyed the Mirissa beach and also the the Galle Face Green.
