Each airline is different but you should normally be able to change your dates; most of the time you'll have to pay a fee. I changed the date on my return ticket with Qatar Airlines recently and it cost £75.

Most tickets are valid for a year, so the new date will have to be within a year of your outbound ticket date.

Note that most airlines have many different rates for the same flight, with the very cheapest frequently not allowing date changes at all, or only allowing them at the same cost as booking a new ticket. If you book the flight through the website of the airline, you can usually choose to get the flight at a more expensive rate with more options for making changes (they tend to have names like "fully flexible" rather than "super saver"), with a full explanation of each rate's distinguishing features available by clicking through.
