I am in Thailand at the moment, next stop is Laos.

Where is the best place to start my adventure in Laos? Vientiane or luangprhabang?

Also where else would any of you recommend?

I want to fit a few days tubing in also!

A popular way to do it is to cross over the border in Northern Thailand at Chiang Khong/Huay Xai and take the slowboat down to Luang Prabang. It takes 2 days and you'll stop overnight in a jungle town called Pak Beng. After spending a few days in Luang Prabang (a great city) you can then head down to Vang Vieng by bus which is a stunning drive and Vang Vieng is where you can do the tubing. From there you can take a bus down to Vientiane which is a nice city and worth a couple of days. We booked the slowboat ticket in Pai, and it also included a night on the border in Chiang Khong, transport there from Pai/Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai and a packed lunch for the boat. The guesthouse on the border will also help with your Laos visa.

Laos is stunning - enjoy!

I agree with bex76.

I took the same trip down the Mekong and it's fantastic. I arranged my trip to Luang Prabang from Chiang Mai. It included transport to Chiang Khong, accommodation and breakfast there, plus the boat to Luang Prabang. The only thing that cost extra was the hotel in Pakbeng and food/drinks for the boat trip.

I really wanted to visit the Plain of Jars (Phonsavan) but just didn't have the time when I was there. From what I hear there are now organized trips running from Luang Prabang to Phonsavan. It's about 10 hours on the bus though. THe other option is to fly up from Vientiane.

You'll love Laos. Great place to visit.
