Hi all, I'm just throwing it out there, but have any of you tried CouchSurfing?
I am from Sydney and have hosted plenty of travellers from all over the world that do your exact trip. Most of them are either hiring a car or purchasing one (fairly cheap) and doing the trip at their own pace, as there is really only one major road up the coast.
Even if youre not looking for accomadation, Couchsurfing also has local meetings and forums such as this where you can meet plenty of other travellers doing the same thing.
And if you do decide to stay with a local or another couchsurfing member, well then that changes the whole experience again. and its all free.
Either way, what Im trying to say is dont worry if you get here alone, it wont take you long to meet friends and other people to travel with. FYI though, as far as I know public transport for that trip isnt going to great, as most the interesting stuff is fairly undeveloped. So I would say either a tour bus or your own transport is the way to go.
Im currently travelling Europe at the moment with my girlfriend (using Couchsurfing) but we should be home by August, so if you have any questions feel free to message me or let me know.
all the best,
ps: for the moderators, I have no affiliation with couchsurfing as a corporate entity, nor am I trying to promote it for personal gain. Im just a user who wants to share it as a resource
I had a quick look at the bonza pass and although it looked good there are some additional costs that are thrown in on top of what you pay which makes me think that really it's not inclusive to the price you already have to pay. I'm going to keep looking around and see if I can find something else. Just don't want to tie myself down to the wrong thing. The discounts were really good though and I'm sure its a great way of meeting people. Will keep looking around and let you know what I decide to do! Have you booked the bonza pass yet?x
I am also 25 yr old female doing the same thing as you but a couple of months later: I am volunteering with gvi in the school on the yasawas in November then heading from Melbourne to cairns up the east coast. Finally I'm going to new Zealand in January.
I'd love to hear how you got on in Fiji and any top tips!
As for bus travel in oz, check out the greyhound mini traveller pass, it's much cheaper than oz experience and is still hop on hop off - that's what I'm thinking of doing with my sister.
Have you made any more plans since your last post?
I bet you're so excited! Your trip sounds fab. I'll let you know how the volunteering goes in the Yasawas, are you on FB? If so the GVI page is quite good for finding out who's going at the same time as you. So many people have said that they are willing to answer any questions about the voluntary work but when I've messaged them nobody has replied, so I will let you know how it went when I get to Oz as I know how it feels to want some useful tips etc.
Thanks for your reccommendation on the greyhound pass, I'll look into that :-)
I haven't made many plans really other than my first few nights when I arrive in Oz from Fiji, visas were easy to get, but now just concentrating on collecting bits n bobs to take to Fiji with me!!!
How long are you volunteering for? When will you be arriving in Oz?
