Could we simply stop all NEW and BUDDING (or perhaps, ALL?) members from starting too many new threads within any set time frame? I think three threads in the past hour should be just fine. Looking at the posting patterns, I don't quite see how or why would any genuine member want to start so many threads in an hour.

Also, there should also be a limit on the number of unique threads (say, five?) a NEW or BUDDING member is able to reply to in the past hour. There are many spammers who spam in replies instead of starting new threads. Limiting replies by unique threads will allow genuine members to participate in an active thread.

There are very enthusiastic new members who want to go to a country and reply to 10-20 threads about that country within an hour (mainly about finding travel companions). Other times, there's threads where two or three members happen to be posting at nearly the same time, and turn the thread into something resembling a realtime chat. (Happened at least five times over the last few months in the Australia & New Zealand forum.)

These are good things; these are members who're really engaging with others on this site. We want to encourage such enthusiasm, and not let fear of spammers destroy it. Yes, spammers are annoying; but they're also (generally) swiftly dealt with, and the disturbance they cause is really only felt by us regulars and Moderators. It's our janitorial job to be disturbed, so let's just deal with that. :)

I added another test today for new members. Around how many links they have in an entry. It doesn't block them from posting. It will allow the post through and then immediately flag it for review. Designed to stop those damned video streaming ones in their tracks.

Cool. Have you looked at blocking the IP for the online streaming spammers Peter, or is it a different address each time?

Yeah, changes every time. We do block IPs when there are repeat problems from them, but most of these spammers seem to operate on new IPs each time. Quite likely the bots are operating from infected computers spread all over the world.

Im a new member and as much as Im annoyed by spam (pet hate) being limited to messages and threads is worse. Im currently chatting to someone who is leaving in a few days and limited to a tiny amount of messages each day is annoying me more.
