Hi Chelsea,

I'v read some of you're posts and me and my partner are hoping to do something similar in march 2013 (No fixed dates and we are flexible) I'm Gene 25yr and my girlfriend Sophie 19. Were looking to get to know people before we head out there and hope to find some suitable house mates along the way to split costs and keep it cheap. Our ideal situation would be to find a spot in or near brisbane to live/work for 6 months(ish) and save up to have a week or 2 off every couple of months to allow us to travel up and down the coast. If all goes well we intend to extend our working visa for a 2nd year so will have to do some agricultural work for awhile. Then possibly move on to another city after the first 6 months and do the same there. Hopefully hear back from you shortly.

G & Soph.

Hi Gene and Sophie,

Hope you both well?

It seems like all of us are wanting to do the same thing regarding travel and work, and best thing is were all heading to the same place, roughly around the same time too.

Were all close in age too which is good as you say you and Sophie are 25 and 19, where me and James are 22 and 21.

Where abouts are you two from?

Sorry if my response seems rushed and not well thought, but i am just on my lunch at moment and need to get back to work, but it would be really good to hear back from you both.

Hello Chelsea, Sophie here :)

Were both good thanks, been working hard trying to save for aussie! How about you and James? Its good news that were similar ages, makes things easier.

We are from Basingstoke, Hampshire. Its a fair few miles from Leeds.

How is your preparation coming along? I see you have your flights booked, what day are you due to leave the UK? We are just getting around to sorting out our visas and looking into accommodation. We were thinking of Hostels too, for the first couple of weeks. I suppose thats the easy bit. but after that who knows.

Hope your day went well.

Maybe a stupid question here, but I'll give it a go anyway: Are there any minimum amount of money that you would need to bring with you, to get INTO Australia? Someone asked this in this thread... Maybe I missed the answer?

Reason for asking is that we (A family of three: Our three year old son, my wife and I) are travelling to Australia some time next year. We have the funds in place by then, but I did not plan to bring much else but some creditcards. I do not like travelling with any real amount of money. Then we would withdraw from cash-points as needed along the trip. Would this do? Would we need like a bank statement as proof that we can take care of ourselves?

We plan to be in Australia for about 2-3 months, as it looks right now...

As a tourist with a return flight, I don't know to be honest? Probably a little less if you had all your accommodation sorted on arrival but if your applying for a working holiday visa?? I had a little look for you and grabbed some info from

"Q: What are the financial requirements of the Working HolidayVisa?

A: You need to have access to sufficient funds to support yourself for the initial stage of your holiday in Australia at least, and you may be asked to show evidence of this on arrival to satisfy immigration officials.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship regard a sufficient amount as being a minimum of AUD$5,000, although the amount may vary depending on your length of stay and how much travelling you intend to do. You should also have a return or onward ticket or at least the funds for a fare to depart Australia if travelling on a one way ticket.

Evidence may include a certified copy of a bank statement and an air ticket out of Australia."

Me personally, would avoid using credit cards just incase you incur extra charges for cash withdrawals abroad. I dnt know if you have any other options available to you?

Thank you very much for your reply and your research! :-) We will be travelling with a round the world ticket or tickets for further flights to prove that we do not intend to stay. Also this will be strict holiday / pleasure, so no working visas needed.
We could carry some cash with us, but I find it a bit dangerous to be honest... I have a fixed fee for cash withdrawals, so it should not be too much. I'd rather pay that little extra for the safety.
Thanks again! Will be a GREAT trip - still seems so far away, but looking insanely forward to it!

Hi Soph :-)

Me and James are very well thanks. Glad you 2 are aswell.

We have been doing same as you really just working and saving. Its hard sometimes, when all my friends are off on holidays or big nights out and i cant afford it. But im sure, when im sailing round whitsundays and sunbathing on bondi beach it will all be worth it ha!

How is your saving coming along?

Yes our flights are booked and we leave the UK on 19/02/2013. (cannot wait)

We have our visas too, we applied through STA travel and less than 24 hours later we got our visa granted.

Have you applied for yours yet?

Sound really organised now be we also have our accomodation for the first few weeks booked! Only thing we really need to do now is save and get insurance!

You and Gene got a rough idea of what date your planning to leave the UK yet?

Is this your first time travelling or have you been anywhere else?

Hope your both having a good day :-)

Thats good to hear. That is a big problem, me and Gene are also finding it hard. We want to be able to spend as much time with our friends before we pick up and go to Aussie but its difficult when your trying to save. We have only just started to save for Australia.

Im looking forward to booking our flights, will give us that extra motivation! We want to be in Aussie at the latest March.

Weve filled out the applications for our visas all we have to do is pay. We havent gone through STA travel but seems like we should have a look into it! :)

Your definately one step ahead of me and gene, were only just looking into accomodation. Were actually looking to find people to share an apartment/flat with when we are out there to make living costs alot cheaper.

No neither of us have travelled before so its all new to us. How about you?

It is hard, but im sure your friends, will understand and you can make up for the nights out you missed when you come back, thats if you are planning coming back.

Yeah me and James will probably do the same looking at apartments, just depends on how the job front goes first, or how we settle. So for our first few weeks it will just be hostels.

No this is our first time travelling too :-).

I feel really excited at the moment but im sure the nerves will kick in once it gets nearer the time. But way this year is flying by it wont be long at all.

Hey, Its G again.. not trying to confuse you guys switching back and forth. Soph's always being nosey though looking over my shoulder lol. Standard.

Yeh our friends are pretty good with us. Alot of them are starting to settle down now anyways so not out as much as they used to be. Their just stropping cause they dont want us to go. They say its coz they'l miss us but i honestly think its jealosuly :P haha As for coming back, I'd like to say no way! but in truth im afraid to say i'd stay out there. Aussies not just a few miles down the road from family and friends. Will just stay open minded and just enjoy our time out there no matter what we end up doing. Have either of you 2 ever thought about staying out there or is that a defo no go for you guys? I guess its a real tough one.

I see you're last post about Whitsundays! I think so far that is right near the top of my list along with scuba diving out at the great barrier reef!! I actually got a pic of Whitsunday islands as my phone screen saver so everytime im pissed at work iv got my motivation to keep me going for a few more months lol. What other ideas have you guys got on you're list of things to do when your out there?? Other cities maybe?

First time travelers to... Who's idea was it to travel that far from home first time round? iv heard people say its a good test of a relationship. Don't know whether thats true thought myself, if i can put up with Sophie here then a sub tropical paradise should be easy right?! lol

Sorry for mega essay... got abit carried away. Anyways. Catch you soon.
