I am travelling to New Zealand in January 2013 for a working holiday, my flight arrives on the 6th January in Auckland...
I'm travelling by myself and would love a travel buddy or someone to chat to who will be out there at the same time!
I am hoping to visit Australia after I have finished working and travelling round New Zealand
would also appreciate any tips or advice from people who have been before!
Book accommodation before arrival. I went there one January and everything was booked up as there was a yachting thing on at the time. Fortunately I have family there.
Ok thanks is there any hostles you would recommend to stay at?
I spent 5 years in NZ after initially going there on a 1 year whv in January 2005! I'd recommend staying in one of the nice, leafy suburbs in Auckland such as Mount Eden, Parnell or Ponsonby, rather than the city centre. They are all close to the city but much nicer than the centre (in my opinion) with good vibes and lots of bars, cafes and shops. For jobs have a look at Seek as that's the main job site out there, or try Backpackerboard for more seasonal or casual jobs.
As Cyberia says, it's worth booking in advance because of the time of year you are arriving. It's the big summer holidays out there in December and January so accommodation tends to be booked up quickly.
Let me know if you need any more tips!
Can second Mount Eden, lived in Auckland for 3 years and 1 of those was in mount eden, along the side of the volcano. Waking up every day to the bird calls and greenery was pure dreamland. Ponsonby has great cafes and Parnell too. All within fairly easy walking distance of the CBD (central auckland), but buses do well to these places too.
As far as hostels, not too sure there are many in those areas, more minor motels and the like that will be more expensive than hostels. Most hostels in CBD will be well booked in Jan, so make some sort of pre planning. Depending on how long you intend to stay in Auckland, I would almost try and find a house/apartment to rent a room. There are so many people looking for tenants, even short term and would be worth a go. Check out the website trademe, http://www.trademe.co.nz/flatmates-wanted
Best option for more longish term accommodation in Auckland
Hope this helps and am very jealous of you... have fun :-)

There are several backpackers' hostels in all of those suburbs - particularly Parnell and Ponsonby.
