No, youre right Dee - it's kind of annoying when you go abroad and see the state of some of the so-called Irish bars. But there's nothing you can do I suppose. <shrug shoulders>

Quoting Dee1979

I do agree with you Evelyn on all counts but I don't like the way people judge Irish Bars without having been in a real one.
Please don't anyone think I have anger management issues - I just cannot stand pidgeon holing!!!

Naaahh, dont worry, we dont think you are an angry person at all...I got a chuckle out of your post. And by the way, we all still love all the irish bars and pubs...we just have to see the real thing some day.

Well then come over and we will welcome you all. And we can promise only good times in decent bars away from the tourist trap!

I agree that some of the 'irish bars' you get overseas are pretty poor. But as an extension to this topic i have been in 'English pubs' in parts of Asia that are shockingly bad. I don't care if it's English, Irish, Mongolian etc., - a good bar is a good bar usually run by good staff, and a bad bar is a bad bar usually run by idiots who think the name alone will make them money.

I went to a bar in Gibraltar once called The Splendid Bar, and splendid it wasn't

Most "Irish" bars abroad are owned by non-Irish people,

I've even been in "Irish" bars or pubs where none of the staff or owner could speak any English (or Gaelic), and couldn't even prounouce Guinness!!

a good bar is a good bar usually run by good staff, and a bad bar is a bad bar usually run by idiots who think the name alone will make them money.

Totally agree with that.

Well done for making me think of my student days drinking in Leeds. The Skyrack is a decent pub no doubt about it.
