Travel Forums Asia Is Vodka generally available to buy in bars in SE Asia?

Hey everyone,

Got a soft spot for vodka just wondering what kind of alcohol in SE Asia (Thailand, Vietnam) is usually supplied in bars. Have to have my priorities right before I travel (no vodka, no SE Asia!!)

Any ideas?, Kevin.

Spirits wise you will get everything you get here just about (whisky and vodka is in abundance.) Beer wise you will get lots of nice local stuff, plus imports like Heineken, carlsberg from Europe. Don't worry, you will have no problems getting drunk. Goes without saying that the imported drinks are always a bit more expensive.

Thailand try Singha and Chang. Vietnamese beer is not that great. Saigon beer is quite nice, 333 is horrible. I drunk Tiger and Heineken the times i went to Vietnam.

do you really have to drink strong alcohols when travelling?

sometimes there is just not enough time to spare on sightseeing.

Cool beer (thai way - on a lot's of ice cubes) is fine in the evening.

Yes, as DaveH says, vodka is available in SE Asia, but is generally more expensive than the local drinks (although still cheaper than the UK!).

I am a vodka drinker myself, but in Thailand I tend to drink Thai whiskey - there are two types, the stronger one is called Mehkong (sp?) DO NOT DRINK THIS ONE! it will make you so ill as it's very strong! The other whiskey is Saengsom or Sangthip (again sp?) - this tastes like Jack Daniels, I usually drink this with lemonade and it's really nice. I think it's usually about THB50 a go, compared to THB140 for vodka. You can also buy by the bottle in bars to save money, the bar will put your name on the bottle and save it for you for the next day's drinking.

Any Thai people on the forum want to correct my spelling of the whiskey's please do! I'm usually drunk when I see the writing on the bottle and my memory gets a bit fuddled!

In Ko Pha Ngan you'd probably be a fan of buckets which are very popular. They cost about 200B and you get a bucket (like the type you make sandcastles with when you're young) filled with vodka, coke and other stuff.
