Hey, how long are you going for.
I am traveling alone also, through Bangkok to north Thailand and then heading to Vietnam, Hanoi and then making my way south....

After you arrive in Ho Chi Minh City, you can go to visit some famous places around here like: Cu Chi Tunnel, Cao Dai Temple,... or explore [snip] Mekong Delta with small Sampans or Cruises. It is a chance for you know more about local life there - life in rivers.:)
Next, you can go to visit Da Lat, Hoi An, Hue, Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa... discovery from the South to the North of Vietnam. Each places have individual attractions...:)

how long could you spend here OP? if possible, you can cover almost all VN highlights in about half a month (still rushing in some cases i know). if you arrive in HCMC, you can start with the route HCMC - Tay Ninh - Dalat - Nha Trang - Quang Ngai - Hoi An - Hue - Hanoi - Sapa - Halong Bay - Hanoi, then depart from Hanoi. if you also depart from HCMC, you'd better just spend time discovering the south only. and believe me, you can take picture, go sightseeing and talk with nice ppl everywhere :-) just read carefully about some tips (you can search directly in this forum) to avoid scams :-)

Vietnam in September is the best holiday time and you will be able to enjoy many local festivals of the country and Dalat and Hanoi should be your top priority in terms of spending time.
