Hi, just wondering if anyone knows the situation with hiring a car/motorhome in OZ?
I'm 22 and have held a full UK driving license for 4 yrs but i dont have my driving license with me in OZ. Will they still allow me to rent a car??

Hey Gallagher,

Unfortunately, it's illegal to drive in Australia (as anywhere else probably) without a driver's license on you. And yes, the rental companies need to see your license. I'm not sure about the age thing, but I'd imagine you would have to pay extra being 22. I think 23 is when it gets cheaper.

Welcome to TP :)

Hi there,
Yep, get someone to post you your licence first - although I have to admit that Bayswater in Sydney let me take a car for 7 weeks and said they would only need to see my licence if there were "any problems". So you could possibly get away with it, but it would be illegal and a big risk. Also, I am obviously over 21, 25 etc., so they didn't need proof of my age!

Hi Gallagher,

You should be able to obtain a copy of your licence via the british consulate in Australia or you may also ask some one at home to fax one directly to the car rental company. This should be more than sufficient.

Having worked in the car rental industry for more than 15 years, I know that there should not be any reason why a car rental company in Australia would not accept this.

If you have any problems with a car rental company in Australia, please let me know...

If your traveling around Brisbane, I recommend speaking to Alpha Car Hire they have locations throughout Brisbane and Gold Coast
