All your important documents + copies put in both rucksack and backpack (in case one goes missing or stolen). Passport, Travel Insurance, Driving License and International Driving Permit, Flight/Hostel/Tour booking confirmations etc.

sleeping bag in case u stay in a dirty hostel or decide to camp under the stars!

pictures of loved ones!

contraception!

camera, ipod, laptop (make sure these are insured if u decide to take them)

enough underwear for about 12 days (you may have an accident haha, jokes aside, you might not now when u will have access to a laundry room next)

maybe a mini first aid kit, (I'm taking one)

remember this is your home away from home, so really think what is essential, coz if you forget it, then you'll need to buy it out there!

I'm heading out there in 2 weeks and doing my first week with Ultimate Oz, so i should be well equipped to start off with.

Hope this info helps!

When I travel, I make sure the following are with me:

-Cash
-Credit Card/ATM's
-Passport/ticket/visa documents/ID card with photo (travel documents)
-Map/Itinerary of travel/Guide book
-Vitamins (meds/paracetamols), First aid kit
-Sewing kit (those small ones that some airlines provide [can be very useful])
-Camera/IPhone/Laptop

I guess that's about it! Enjoy!

Hi Ciara,

You should take a comprehensive list like this - http://www.travellerspoint.com/packing-list.cfm - and then take the bare minimum. ;)

The essentials are your personal items like ID, documents, cash, toiletries and entertainment for the plane and everything else can be bought in HK or Melbourne.

As to clothes: take less jeans, less shoes, and less underwear.

That pains me to say but it is so true! The worst part of a trip is getting home and realising you didn't wear half the items you packed. Jeans and shoes add unnecessary weight and one normally lives in the same jeans quite happily for days. Remember you are travelling to a civilised country and laundromats are not hard to come by, besides if you take underwear for 9 days you only need to take clothes for 9 days as that is how frequently you will be laundering.

Have a great trip!

ear plugs for flights and noisy backpacker rooms.
face mask for flights and backpacker rooms where someone is always turning the lights on and off! :)

Oh and shower thongs!

Remembered that this morning. Highly recommend shower thongs in hostels...
