Hey Everyone,

I really need some advice,

Im sitting on the fence with this one.

Japanese Encephalitis: Is it necessary ??

This is my trip (basic as we have no plans really just a basic guidline) and baring in mind i have a friend coming with me and he is not getting it and has already made his mind up but im still not sure.

I leave from the UK on the 2nd November and will be flying in to Bangkok, Well be spending a few days there and getting a flight to Philippines and maybe spend around a week n a half there. Then will be coming in to Vietnam (about 2 weeks here) Then over to Laos (a week here just to do tubing) Then down to Cambodia, Going to angkor watt etc, shinoukville, probably spend around two weeks here Then down to koh chang and carry on down thailand, We want to go Chang Mai but not sure if well have time but all in all our trip around asia will be 3months long. spread out around the north and south of asia and the philliphines.

I dont plan to be in any rural areas, i do want to experiance some rural life but i dont think i will be doing that in philliphines as i just want to chill here when we get there.

Ive been to thailand 3 times in the last 4-5 years. and i spent over a month n half each time here.
Ive never had the jab.
Ive never had the rabies jab either.

Ive had every other jab you should get just not them to.

My freind is a nurse and highly recomends i get it but my GP has not told me to get it. :/

Its so expensive for such a slim chance of getting it but i dont want to turn a trip down because i havent had the jab. ive heard you only need it if you go near pigs and rice farms, and as far as i no i went near these before and was fine lol but i dont no if ill be going near again. all in all will be in the north around 1 n half months.

Please let me know what you think and if youve had it.

Ive got an appointment booked for thursday with the travel clinic to ask them also. but i only have 9 weeks left to go so i got to act fast if i do want them xxx

Thanks guys xxxxxxxxx

I spent 3 months in SE Asia (similar route to you) and didn't have the Japanese E jab. I was advised at the time (and for subsequent trips to Asia) that it's only recommended if you plan to spend extended periods in rural areas as only then are you considered high-risk for the disease. Rabies is a bit more a of a grey area I think; I've never had that jab either but it does buy you more time to get to a hospital if you get bitten. Having said that, you'd be extremely unlucky to get bitten by an animal while travelling.
