Travel Forums Europe Plane, train or automobiles?!?

I am traveling throughout Eastern Europe with my mama at the end of October into November 2012.
Our trip begins in Budapest and I am hoping to stop in Munich, Germany, Pula, Croatia, Northern Serbia and possibly a few other destinations.
Looking at renting a vehicle for the duration of the trip but I am now learning about this highway stickers and various fees that can accumulate quickly and may make driving less tolerable. Also I haven't been to visit Europe in over 8 years and I remember fuel not being very inexpensive as well.

What is the most affordable way to travel: by plane, train or automobile? Combination?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Probably a combination of air and rail - depending on dates and demand. I would think Oct-Nov would be low demand on public transportation. There is a Balkan rail pass that could possibly save you a few dollars?
