Welshman has indicated that this thread is about Australia

Has anyone managed to get any work whilst in Oz without a working visa?

We have a three month tourist visa but I might need to earn a few dollars to keep me going. I don't want to use up my one working visa if I'm only going to be there for three months.

Any ideas on how easy it is to find work without a visa? Do many employers insist on them or is it more relaxed?

Unfortunately Welshman, it's quite illegal to work in Australia without a working visa.

As we can't allow any discussion on how to evade the law, if anyone really wants to answer this, then please send your comments as private messages.

My suggestion: save your pennies before you go and budget to make it last. :)

Conspiracy to defraud the Commonwealth is a very serious offence in Australia

Fropm my own experience, all my jobs in Oz bar one (and that was in an office) were cash in hand, the employers didn't ask for a tax number or a visa!

And that is quite illegal. If you're on an ordinary tourist visa, you're not allowed to work. Simple as that really.

But a little story for you. Lived in Sydney and the bar use to go to. All of a sudden one day had a total change of staff. Asked about this and found out that Immigration had hit the place and taken all the backpackers illegally working there.

Not to bad you say they just deport you. Well yeah but I’ve heard from a few people I know. When they catch you before the Deport you home they through you into Prison for a while n I don’t mean a deportee prison I mean the real thing. Just to teach you a lesson.

Then you get black listed n band from the country for a good few years. Really don’t thinks its worth taken the risk. Best to save up as much as you can .

But have a good time on Hol's mate . You'll love the place

Irish and English form the bulk of visa overstayers in Australia. Hospitality / bar work is where a lot of these overstayers end up due to a reluctance and inability on the part of employers in not-so-cash-based businesses to break the law. Depite giving a visa to one of Saddam Husseins ex-employees and the odd ex-war criminal our Immigration department is flush with success in busting illegal bar workers - and good on them. As a hard working taxpaying citizen of this fine land I would take great pleasure in dobbing in illegal workers. Our immigration dept even has an official "Dob-in line." And bar work..........talk about possibly the worst place in the world to work illegally.
