First time travelling: need advise, help and a buddy

I'm a student and have wanted to travel all my life, finances concern me though.
I'd love to travel america, and wondered if anyone knew roughly how much spending money i'd need? i'm not after luxuries and im very low maintainence! advice will be highly appreciated as im all new to this!

Just wondering if anybody is wanting to go travelling to Thailand around March/April time?

I dont mind going it alone as Im pretty confident but lets face it, it is pretty daunting going to a foreign country alone for the first time never mind travelling around it.

Im looking at going for about a month.
