I've never slept in a hostel dorm and I was wondering what I'll be letting myself in for. Will it be smelly feet?, loud snoring, farting or someone drunk falling over me thinking it's their bed or even someone chucking up on the floor?. How bad can it get

never tried - but go with your travel companions. The more of you the better room rate.

if you can afford a holiday - most probably you can afford a separate room (especially in a poorer countries).

Dorm rooms can be a great way to get to know people, to be honest I got pretty tired of them after a while especially since I'm quite lazy occasionally.

There are always a few characters you find be wary of the few:

1. The spreader, this person leaves their stuff literally everywhere, floor, ceiling ;) their bed, your bed

2. The early riser, this person has no regards for those of us with sloths for ancestors and will get up at the crack of dawn, turn the light on and make as much noise as possible, EVERY MORNING!

3. The air conditioner, Turn it on to full blast and freeze out your opponants! hehe ( I couldn't count the times I nearly caught a life threatning disease of the cold that I cant spell)

Actually I quite like them, not every day though, I like to alternate like weeks, especially when I'm travelling on my own, anyway you never know when your gonna need your own bed;)

Uhm, I've experienced smelly feet, loud snoring, farting and (quite a few) drunk people. Also very loud and passionate love making at 4/5 in the morning in the bunk bed above me. I know someone who got peed on as the person sleeping above them wet themselves and I am sure the chucking has occured on more than one occassion. You also have to deal with robbery and totally different living rythms for everyone in the room.

Having said that, I think dorm rooms are great. You meet interesting (and weird) people, can have a laugh and a drink with someone in the same mindset that you never met before, experience things you definitely don't get to in a private room and none of the things above are the kind of things that would ruin my day (well, maybe the peeing thing...), much less my trip. Plus, when you're travelling by yourself, you can't beat them for price by a long shot!!!

Just try and get a top bed if you can ;)

In fairness, it can be all of those things ((on one horribly memorable but very funny moment, it was somebody doing all of teh above - and leaving his stuff around the room - all at the same time)).

But they are normally great fun, and unless you are a very light sleeper or very easily annoyed (people like me will deliberately wind you up), you'll be fine and no problems. I don't use them, but most people suggest ear plugs as a definite neccessity to be sure of sleep.
