I'm expanding my honeymoon to include New Zealand but have no idea where to even start. We're not too interested in the nightlife but we'd like to get a good overall view of the varied areas of the country. Also, if there's any specific activities or companies you could recommend or NOT recommend.
How long are you planning to spend in NZ?
For a honeymoon I would reckon Wanaka would be a really nice place to spend a few days. I stayed at the Purple cow and from the patio out front you get an excellent view of the lake with the mountains in the background. Milford Sound is really nice as well and worth doing a cruise on.
My favourite activities were probably a sky-dive at taupo, white water rafting at Rotorua, flying a plane at Kaikoura, doing a glacier hike at Franz Josef Glacier and canoeing at Abel Tasman.
the only activity which I was slightly disappointed with was whale watching. It was okay, just not quite as impressive as I had imagined.
The south island generally is where you should spend your time. Motorhoming is a good way to see things while still getting around.
If you do go to the North island, go to Waitomo and spend the night at Te Tiro cabins - simple and stunning.
Woo hoo! Somebody else has recommended Waitomo! I was starting to feel like a broken record. I loved the blackwater rafting - especially when they turn your cave lights off and you're in pitch darkness - and suddenly your eyes adjust and the glowworms come into view. I loved it - it was the highlight of my trip.
