Me and my boyfriend are taking backpacks + a sleeping bag incase we need to stay in Hostels....

Backpacks should be better, much more space and easier to carry/drag with wheels.

Most hostels in Australia and New Zealand don't allow sleeping bags, as they spread bed bugs from hostel to hostel. All hostels will have linen. So I strongly recommend leaving your sleeping bag behind (except if you know for certain that you're going camping). Will save you a ton of space and weight.

I went to Asia then OZ for a year and took 1 85 litre backpack which had wheels. I settled a few places for a few month and just bought a large over the sholder bag for my extra stuff a bought along the way. I wouldnt say taking a few cases a good idea, i'd stick to one and just buy a extra bag if/when u need it. Your wear the same clothes so much you wont reaslise till your there just how much stuff you will go through... enjoy :)

Im getting my rucksack tomorrow! Then its packing time!

I'm getting i think a 65 litre + 15 back pack.

I've got a case full at the moment that im leaving behind, four bags of clothes im getting rid of and I bet I will be getting rid of some of the clothes that I won't be taking to OZ with me!

Damn... just remembered Sun cream.

Hey,

I was torn between the same problems and i think both have pros and cons, i have decided now on a nice size suitcase on wheels, as i figured im not gonna hike from city to city with my belongings, they go in the car or plane. I have however got a small ruck sack which i will use for day to day outings and if i get the chance to do an uluru expedition my suitcase will go into storage :) .. i am however only in Australia for 3 months with out a permanent place to stay ... gonna be winging most of it :)

You'll only be there for 3 months and you're not staying in one place yet you want to travel with a big wheeled suitcase?!

Different strokes...

Cheers,
Terry

I know! Just call me a crazy lady! I did buy a ruck sack but it wouldnt fit all the things i needed :) ... its not too big its a nice size and its got four wheels for a super glide along sensation :D. I dont plan on trekking from hostal to hostal and me and a friend are renting a car for most the trip so a suitcase seemed ok :)
