I would recommend the VIP card. All the backpacker cards will pay for themselves if you stay at lots of hostels and do lots of tours, but overall there are more VIP hostels than YHA/Nomads in Oz, so that's the one to go for IMO.

Virtually any ATM in Oz will let you withdraw money from a British account, as long as its part of the Cirrus network (which most accounts are).

I'd also recommend getting a return ticket as this generally works out cheaper than two single tickets, and even if you're not sure of the exact date that you want to return, you can always change the date pretty cheaply once you're in Oz. I'd also recommend booking your flight ticket ASAP as the later yo uleave it the more expensive it will get (as all the cheap airlines get booked out).

I was in Sydney in May a few years ago and the weather was pretty good. I even went to Bondi one day, but there were also a couple of rainy days, but overall fairly decent weather by English standards.

I'd take a sleeping bag if I was you for when you're travelling. Some hostels charge a couple of dollars for linen so over a few months a sleeping bag will save you a few dollars.

Sorry I can't help you with your questions about working, as I've only ever been to Oz on holiday.

Although its easy to use your UK account you will get charged for using it more than if you open a Australian one. Before I travelled I opened a bank account on line www.citibank.com.au which is helpful and they have an account suitable for travellers and you will need this account in Oz if you want your wages paid into there if you plan to work.

To work also you will need a tax file number which you can apply for on the australian government web site. I applied for mine before I arrived as it take a while when you get to Oz and you cant work without it.

Also with regards to the return flight its best to get one as sometimes people get asked to proove they are leaving Oz in a years time as well, they are very picky over here.

Hope this is of some help feel free to drop me a mail via the web site if you need to know anything else.

Sorry forgot to add, yes bring smart office wear as some places ask for coorporate wear and its good for interviews etc. Although its very very very realxed here the odd company in the city does require a suit.
Sleeping bag is also handy even though most hostels provid linen etc but thats usually just a sheet and no warmer cover (probabaly wont need though) always better to be on the safe side.

I'd have to disagree with brittchic with the tax file number issue. We had no problems at all applying for our TFN, it was done online and you can start working as long as you've applied for it. The actual number will be sent out to you by post within a week or so.
Hope that helps
