Traveljunkie,
You don't list your home country or where you are flying from. If you don't have any success finding an affordable flight into SGN, then perhaps flying into BKK makes more sense. Then hop on an Air Asia flight: DMK-SGN.

I think a good place to spend Christmas might be DaLat. Cool, green, pretty. It will certainly feel more like winter than HCMC. Nha Trang is a party town and might be a good choice for NYE. My suggested route would be: HCMC 23rd, bus up to DaLat on 24th. Bus over to NT around the 28th. NYE in NT, overnight bus back to HCMC on 2nd. You get in early am on the 3rd, flight home.

Accommodations: Most budget visitors stay in the Pham Ngu Lao area of HCMC. De Tham St. Heaps of low cost rooms in this area. My blog covers mini-hotel alley, DaLat & NT. Top of this page has a option labeled: 'Accommodation'. Select VN, then your cities. It lists highest rated places first. You are going in the busiest time period of the year. You might want to book ahead of time because of this. Good luck with your planning.
