You're a legend B! Thanks for you advice so far. Let me give you guys a run down of what I may well do:

LA
Santa Barbara
Big Sur
Yosemite NP
San Francisco
Redwood NP (End of PCH 1?)

Oregon Coast
Mt. St. Helens NM
Olympic NP
Seattle
Vancouver

From Vancouver I'd probably try to find a cheap flight back to LA before I set off for Fiji. I'd probably do most of this trip by car! B what are your thoughts on this route?
Any idea as to how long it would realistically take?
Any guidelines as to where I could rent a cheap but decent car that I could leave further up the West coast?
Also any ideas on where to get a cheap flight from Vancouver to LA?

Thanks for all of this... Also if any one has any recommendations or further ideas please let me know

Helen

I'm thinking the whole trip (unrushed) will be about 2-3 weeks. I'd leave at least a week for the California part. LA to Santa Barbara will be short but Santa Barbara to Big Sur (an AWESOME place)would be about 4-5 hours depending on how much you stop. Then another 5 hours to Yosemite. Add another 4 for Yosemite to San Fran, then I'm thinking it'll be about 7-8 hours to the redwoods. Not sure about beyond California but you'll need at least another week. You can rent a car from any of the major dealers and drop it off anywhere in the US. Try Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty...Hertz is the best choice. I checked into it for you and it would be about $200 a week for car rental ($650 monthly)from Hertz. Also not sure about the flights but Air Canada or Air Alaska might be a good try; try Travelocity.

The route sounds great! I'd make a little stop in Monterey while travelling from Big Sur to Yosemite. Keep in mind that while the PCH is BEAUTIFUL, it is also slower than taking the main freeways. I'm jealous already. I'll just sit here in chilly Chicago and stare at my Big Sur calendar. ;)

Thank you so much for all of your advice. With your help I'm feeling much more confident about my West Coast adventures! Have you been to New York My first stop is there and your expert opinion would be much appreciated!
